Overview

In Haste with Aloha: Letters and Diaries of Queen Emma, 1881-1885 by David W. Forbes

More than 130 years after her death in Honolulu, April 1885. Queen Emma remains a living presence in her native Hawai'i. She is commemorated by the hospital that she and her husband Kamehameha IV helped found and that she endowed; by a museum in Nu'uanu Valley, once one of her homes, in which many of her possessions are lovingly kept and displayed; and by her extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts preserved in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum. St. Andrew's Cathedral, which she and her husband labored to establish, and the adjacent St. Andrew's Priory School for Girls both honor and cherish her memory. Children are still named in commemoration of her life, and a street in Honolulu bears her name. For anyone this is a considerable legacy. The Queen's life is still of interest to many, and her thoughts, action, and deeds are more accessible to us than any of the Hawaiian ali'I or members of the royal family, because a large body of her letters and personal papers survives.
