Three years ago she was left in pieces . . .
Most college freshmen love the newfound freedom of living on campus, but none of them craves it like Beth Caplan. One ill-fated night when she was fifteen left her locked in a posh prison of private tutors. It's for the best, everyone said, and maybe it was. But after years of hard work and healing, the one person who never thought of her as broken could be the one to break her all over again. And Beth can't seem to stay away now any more than she could all those years ago.

As soon as David March learned his best friend's little sister was enrolling at his school, he promised to look after her, and promised himself he'd keep a safe distance. But the sweet little girl he'd grown up with has transformed into a gorgeous young woman, and she's attracting attention from people she shouldn't-like the ex who nearly destroyed her and a strange new student with a disturbing habit of showing up wherever Beth goes. But for David, the most troubling discovery is realizing that he doesn't just want Beth to be safe. He wants her to be his.

This book wasn't exactly my style ... the characters have enough appeal to draw you in somewhat, and the angst that continues throughout keeps you reading to find out what happens ... but the writing was tough to appreciate. It feels like it's geared towards a younger audience in fitting in with their lingo and trends, but the language is truly too much to be appreciated if anyone is gauging what that young adult is reading. I'm not offended by the F bomb at all, but there is such a thing as over-use ... and this book knocked it out of the park (750+)!

when beth caplan starts college she's already lived through significant trauma. in pieces is not about her recovery, it's about her showing her strength and maturity in the face of problems that would have broken her in the past. and the one thing she has in her life, that she didn't then, is the support of david march. he is her older brother's rough-around-the-edges best friend. but he has always been her champion. even when she didn't know it. he's loved her for as long as he can remember, and the only thing that keeps him from declaring it is the fact that his best friend doesn't approve of him for his sister. but as circumstances force beth and david into closer proximity, the pull between them is impossible to deny. and eventually they don't want to deny it. because they are the best possible versions of themselves when they are together. and even given everything they have to lose, what they share is immeasurably more precious. this is an emotional new adult novel, there is a hint of suspense and menace throughout that heightens the drama unfolding in the plot in the best possible way. the angsty forbidden aspect of beth and david's romance works perfectly. and when they finally give into each other, it's perfect. **in pieces will publish on october 10, 2017. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/grand central publishing (forever) in exchange for my honest review.

After a few rough years, Beth Caplan is ready for a new beginning at college. What she doesn't count on is having her brother's best friend and her crush, David March, as her babysitter and bodyguard. David March doesn't mind keeping an eye on her best friend's little sister. He always had a crush on her, but knew that Cap wouldn't approve. Also, he doesn't feel he's worthy of Beth. Now they are together in college and it seems they can't stay way from each other. Will they finally give in to their feelings? I loved In Pieces! Beth and David's story is beautiful and heartbreaking. It took me in a rollercoaster ride of emotions, making me laugh, cry and scream. There are so many feelings in this book and it hooked me from the first page. The dash of mystery and suspense, and all the angst kept me on my toes and I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I loved the chemistry between David and Beth and the little flashbacks. Beth Caplan is a sweet young woman that has been through a lot. She has demons she tries to keep at bay and made some choices that had huge consequences. But she's trying to stay strong and become a better and happier version of herself. I loved how she stood up for herself during the family dinner. David March is known to be a cocky playboy. But he's also very sweet and protective. He always had feelings for Beth, but it was ingrained in him that he was a disappointment. So, he believes he'll never be good enough for her. He made me swoon a lot but also had some jerk moments. This is my first book by Danielle Pearl and I loved it! In Pieces is beautifully written and hooked me from the first page with its incredible story and amazing characters. This is the perfect friends-to-lovers / brother's-best-friend romance and I can't wait to read more by Danielle. I really hope she'll write Reeve and Lani's story.

This was my first Danielle Pearl book. And whoa! What an introduction. I love, love, love the friends-to-lovers, childhood crush tropes, but this book is so much more than any of those tropes. So much more. David and Beth’s characters have so much past between them and on their own that I felt like I was also part of their lives. I felt every emotion that came off the pages-either from the flashbacks or the present- that I sometimes needed to walk away from the book to process. The angst was so palpable that I held my breath sometimes to to ease the pain of it and to help me from yelling at these two when they were being ridiculous. I will most definitely pick up Danielle’s other works and add her to my automatic read list. *an arc was provided in exchange for an honest review*

Beth Caplan is a survivor. Once shattered by a decision that she can never forget, she is determined to enjoy all that college life has to offer. David March is Beth’s brother’s best friend. When he finds that Beth is enrolling at the same college, he makes it known that he will do everything in his power to protect her. To make sure she’s safe. He just didn’t know he’d be sacrificing his heart in the process. While her past comes crashing back, Beth is determined not to break. Not again. “This feeling- this is what is most dangerous. Because I could become addicted to this.” David and Beth were like magnets on every page. Every word, every scene, it was simply electricity flowing through the story. While their relationship is seen as off-limits, that did nothing to take away from the fact of how drawn these two were to each other. My heart raced as I felt each intense emotion of their desire. Completely enthralled by the depth of their story, you can’t help but feel that Beth and David were simply magic on the pages. There was a push and pull that kept me inherently invested in their triumphs and their times of heartbreak. This. Will. Move. You. “Do you know that I love you?” Despite being off limits, David’s love rebelled against anything logical. He pursued her heart in the only way he could, by guarding it. He loved in silence. In secret. But his love was no less felt. Loving Beth could cost him so much, yet the thought of not loving her was never really an option. It was so much more than the typical brother’s best friend romance. When loving someone, you abandon all regard and everything that comes with them. It reminds you that love can come at a price, but it’s worth the cost. “It’s imprinted into every day of my life, every... thought – caring about you more than I should.” Ms. Pearl is a master of crafting stories that speak for the voiceless. For those that live in silence. She writes their stories with a grace and understanding in a way that very few are capable of. Inspiring in it’s execution, thought provoking in its unraveling, there are not enough stars to truly capture the magnitude of the sheer beauty and bravery this story holds. Bewitched by the devastating beauty of the author’s romantic and refined prose, I was absolutely lost in the story of David and Beth. I never wanted to put this one down! Palpable, meticulously written, In Pieces is love in its most powerful form.

After being completely crushed by her last boyfriend Beth Caplan isn't so willing to travel down that road again anytime soon, it took her a long time to get over what was done to her and she has no intentions of repeating past mistakes. She is ready to focus on the new adventure in front of her, put love and relationships completely on the back burner, and embrace all the life experiences college has to offer her. But there is one thing that is standing in her way, a very sexy thing that is, her older brothers best friend and her newly appointed babysitter... and she isn't about to allow him to cramp her style. David March has had a thing for his best friends little sister for as long as he can remember, there hasn't been a time through the years that he's hasn't wished she was his girl. He's watched her go through a horrible break-up and been there to help her pick-up the pieces, and seen her at her worst, but it has never deterred him from caring deeply for her. When she arrives at the same college he attends, he decides to appoint himself her bodyguard, he figures he can keep the men away, and secretly feed his wish for her to be his... even if it is under false pretenses. But then things get a little hairy, and her personal safety is put at risk, so he convinces her to move in with him, and things start to take an unexpected turn form there! In Pieces is a heartfelt read that is sure to keep your emotions stirring and have your undivided attention from start to finish! From the moment I started it the words took a hold and an addiction settled over me that I knew wouldn't be satisfied until I had devoured every last word. These wonderfully crafted characters found a way into my heart and I couldn't help but feel for them and cheer them on! I have to say this was quite the impressive first read for me, one that I definitely won't forget anytime soon, it gave me the feels, made me blush, and left my heart overflowing!! Highly recommend this one!!
