In Pieces by Sally Field

In this intimate, haunting literary memoir, an American icon tells her story for the first time, and in her own gorgeous words—about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

One of the most celebrated, beloved, and enduring actors of our time, Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated the nation for more than five decades, beginning with her first TV role at the age of seventeen. From Gidget's sweet-faced "girl next door" to the dazzling complexity of Sybil to the Academy Award-worthy ferocity and depth of Norma Rae and Mary Todd Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity. Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within.

With raw honesty and the fresh, pitch-perfect prose of a natural-born writer, and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings readers behind-the-scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood, but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships—including her complicated love for her own mother. Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring and important account of life as a woman in the second half of the twentieth century.

I always thought actors, especially of Sally Field's quality, lived exotic, rich, beautiful lives. This was a raw, real version that I would have never guessed at. All I can say is, WOW!

Reading this book, I could hear Ms. Field's voice tell her story. Honest, heart wrenching at times and so genuine. Thoroughly enjoyed getting a glimpse of her and am inspired by her perserverance.

I'd say she was stronger than she thought. It's a shame she couldn't accept how good she was at the time it was happening. Thank you for you're openness. Enjoy your life, you've earned it.

I wanted so much to love this biography, as I do the author (or actor) but it kind of left me flat. I wanted more. To really know who Sally is as a person but I got the feeling that Sally doesn't really know that answer. Her description of Burt Reynolds was no big surprise to me. Self centered, egotistical, stuck up....I would have been floored if he was anything but. It is, HOLLYWOOD careful what you wish for, right? Some areas were skipped over while some went on too long, as if the reader couldn't fathom what was being told. Don't get me wrong, I think Sally Field is the best actress of her generation and if her life and family added to this gift, even in a twisted way, then it was a gift for us all. After all, life IS like a box of chocolates. Thank you Sally

First celebrity bio that is raw, real and truthful. Sally Field did a deep dive into her psyche and that of her family. Loved the book.

Great book but mostly about her awful abuse and insecurity and how she finally found some peace. She had a bumpy ride and I always admired her, but never knew how much she had to deal with. She didn't hold back and you felt part of her therapy as she wrote. I wish she had more lighthearted stories, that Burt wasn't just a few pages of drugs and narcissist encounters but her memory of their time is hers and his was a little more varied, although honest for him. His memoir mentioned more lighthearted moments also and how he fought for her to be with him on Smokey. If you are looking for tidbits on movies and TV shows, it is very little of that, one line about being in Murphy's Romance, I don't remember Forest Gump, she mentions filming others, but no costar stories, no mention of liking this one or that one, (although Joanne Woodward got kudos) She didn't have to do that but just be warned it's not a "behind the scenes" at work as much as it is at home.

Sally Fields is not only an exceptional actor but a honest person. She reminds me of so many women who struggle with self doubt and in securities. You feel her anguish and can relate to her anxieties. As a woman I can so relate especially in light of the Metoo movement. Ms. Fields should be so proud of all accomplishments and talent.

I always said if I put my life story on film I would want Sally Field to play the part. Knowing your story parts of mine would be a rerun for her. We keep so much inside.

Well written, honest portrayal of love, dysfunction, hope and healing. Sally Field has written a moving story of her life that most of us could never imagine. Illuminating and gripping, funny and engaging. Loved it.

As I started to read this book I was angered by all that she went through. I have always liked and admired Sally as a person and actor. Her life experiences bring to life many of the same horrible things we as women have gone through. As I said I have always loved Sally and think she is an amazing person. Even more so now that I have read her story. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Always be proud of what you have done.

What an amazing woman. I can’t say enough about this book. What a life she’s lived.

Sally Field is 2 mos. older than I am. When I first saw her in Gidget I thought - dopey series, but she’s a great little actress with, I thought, a future. Sally has given some knockout performances which always ring true because she just IS the character. I could always identify with her, so she’s been my very favorite actress over the years. I found this memoir to be very depressing though. I am so sorry she had a tough childhood and suffered sexual abuse, especially at a time when these types of things were never spoken about. To me her narrative was confusing because I wasn’t sure if she was telling what actually happened, or what she imagined or dreamed had happened, what she perceived happened or why she couldn’t exactly remember what happened —not just in regard to the sexual abuse but about pretty much everything. In another review I saw criticism of her parenting, but I saw nothing wrong -- she appeared to be a very loving, concerned mother, and she had the luxury of having family (mother, sister) care for her children while she was working and expressed great appreciation for that. (Momma has to make a living, you know) Sally has worked with some very fine actors/actresses and it would have been fun to learn about her working relationships with them. I hope she will write another book in the future.

Sally Fields doesn't just tell her story. She allows you to feel it, to place yourself in alignment with her life. We women have on common the bonds of being a child, a hurt child, a mother, a mother-daughter bond, loneliness despite the men in our lives, and more. Ultimately, this is a journey of self discovery & self awareness. Ms. Fields allows us to also see the discovery & awareness that occurs with the relationships we have in our lives, with our children, families, friends, and loves. Moving in many ways. Encourages journaling & self analysis. A must read if your ready to be open about your life.

Fascinating life none of which I never could have predicted. Well written, very honest and truly from her heart and soul. Very easy to see why this woman has been so driven and successful with her choices. I was able to relate so well to most of her childhood descriptions of so many of her relationships with her grandmother and aunts who played with such depth into her life. This opportunity of peeking into her live really made me love Sally Field so much more with deep appreciation. So glad I bought her book.
