About the Author

John Slavik grew up as a 'military brat' and eventually followed in the footsteps of many other family members. Before joining the Air Force, against his father's wishes . . . Joseph said, "I, and my brothers, have shed enough blood for this country. You can do ANYTHING else!", John worked in a private logistics firm during which time he was introduced to mainframe computer programming and database design, was a driver for his school off-road racing team, worked as a reserve police officer, pit crewed for a local professional race car driver, apprenticed and eventually managed his own shop in auto repair while engaged with Andy Granatelli and Mario Andretti in developmental automotive projects. After the auto business went bankrupt he got his father's permission to enlist in the ANG of Arizona and led a successful and highly decorated career as a law enforcement and security specialist eventually qualifying as a sniper and obtaining a private pilot's license. His career, as may be gathered from this book, was ended by a drunk driver and he went back to computer programming and engineering. John promised himself that he would swim in every ocean and sea during his life. A promise that he kept. He has visited every state in the US at least once and has spent at least two weeks in over 60 countries. His love and appreciation for people of all cultures and nationalities was developed through years of living among and within each of the various peoples he has visited.

Mr. Slavik has many hobbies and interests that include the building and piloting of both kayaks and full-sized experimental aircraft. He has five children, two sons and three step-daughters by a second marriage to this books illustrator. He currently lives in Phoenix, AZ with the two remaining juvenile children, his wife, his octogenarian mother, three dogs and four cats.

I really enjoyed this novella, in fact I did something I rarely do, I read it three times and still feel like I need more. That is the mark of a good story to leave you wanting more. The desciptions of the exotic locations make you want to visit them, the dialogue of the characters is spot on, the words the author used were brilliant. The story flowed well from chapter to chapter, except possibly the anecdote about the chili which did not seem to fit the storyline (although funny). Highly recommended!

A gem of a story well penned by a wordsmith. The descriptions are vivid and memorable and the adventures leave you wanting more from this previously undiscovered author. I will be looking for more titles by John Slavik and personally was moved to tears by the sonnet he included at the end. Though short it seems meant to be enjoyed more than once and has substance in the allegorical quality of a life's journey.
