These books have always been my favorites. Wynn is a great character and this book was a great addition to an already addictive series. I do miss the dialog between Margiere, Leesil, Chap and her. The New Fay was a great way to keep chap involved and show his love for the sage. These characters are greatly written and continue to evolve. This book starts off where Child of A Dead God left off. Wynn has returned to the guild with all of the books she recovered from the castle in the mountains. What is revealed in the text upsets the order and some force unlike any undead Wynn has seen before is attacking the sages. Chane has followed Wynn, despite his promise, and ends up helping Wynn defeat the force. This book was great and the next one Though Sea and Stone will be great as well.

¿In Shade And Shadow¿ by Barb & J.C. Hendee is the first novel in the ¿Noble Dead Saga ¿ Series Two¿. For those of you who¿ve never read ¿The Noble Dead series¿, the books have mainly dealt with three primary characters, Magiere (a dhampir), Leesil (an elven assassin), and Chap (a wolf with the spirit of a Fay). The trio, with the help of a Wynn Hygeorht, go about killing vampires and learning about their own mysterious pasts. Their stories are told in a series of six books.

In an unusual move, the Hendees have started with a new series set in the same world but focused on new characters. The protagonist in this series is Wynn Hygeorht. Wynn is a member of the Guild of Sagecraft, an organization devoted to gaining knowledge. The story revolves around scrolls found in the last book of the Noble Dead Series. These Scrolls appear to have deadly secrets about an ancient enemy that nearly destroyed all good people a thousand years ago.

I was worried about ¿In Shade And Shadow¿ not using the primary characters from previous books because so much of the plot revolved around them, but the Hendees pull it off. The success of the book is the new characters and the plot. The new characters don¿t have the same issues as the previous characters, Magiere, Leesil, and Chap. Nor are the problems that occur solved in the same old way. No more easy ¿head chopping¿ or brutal methods. Wynn has to use her brains. The plot has more of a murder mystery element to it then in previous books. This book is not so much a fantasy book as it is a murder mystery filled with vampires, wizards, and deadly spirits.

I enjoyed it.

After parting ways from Magiere the Dhampire and Leesil the half-breed elf, Wynn Hygeorht returns to the Guild of Sagecraft in Calm Seatt. She brings with her journals she has cribbed that describe what she witnessed and did as well as arcane texts written by vampires during the time of the Forgotten History and the Great War, millenniums ago. These need translation, but to her disappointment she is not one of the scholars working on this because the highest ranks consider her confused as the Noble Dead Vampires do not exist.

The Guild Scholars translate what they can with what Wynn brought home before farming them out to various scriptoriums to be copied. When two journeymen go to pick up the texts, they are killed by what looks like a black blob of darkness that murders people without touching them. Identical homicides follow of those picking up the texts that the killer steals. Wynn abetted by Chane, a Noble Dead, who has feelings for her, investigates and discovers the serial killing thief is a different type of undead than previously encountered. Both believe that this is connected to the Enemy who destroyed the world during the times of the Forgotten History. Wynn has to rely on her beliefs to prevent a killer from bringing the seemingly invincible Enemy back for a second world destruction tour.

IN SHADE AND SHADOW starts the second Noble Dead series turning the focus from Magiere the Dhampire and Leesil to the little scribe Wynn. She is stubborn and independent with a need to know the truth. Readers learn what is expected of scribes as the job description does not allow for poetic license or interpretation; instead one writes down what one is given even if it is obviously false. Wynn¿s need to go beyond the word will make her a fan favorite on a par with the heroes of the first saga. Thus she and Chane conduct a serial killer investigation concentrating ion what the predator is and the link to the return of the Enemy rather than just note another murder by the blob. This is a great start to the newest Noble Dead series.

I can't say enough about the Noble Dead series by Barb and J.C. Hendee. This book is the 1st book in the second series and follows the adventures of Wynn Hygeorht, a sage, who is also a character in the first series. I loved the 1st series and was afraid that I wouldn't enjoy the second as much, but I was entirely wrong. I throughly enjoyed this and the second book "Through Stone and Sea" as much as those in the 1st. All I can say is "keep them coming Barb and J.C.". I will have a hard time being patience until the next book arrives in January of 20011.

I have read all of the Noble Dead series and loved them all, but have had a soft spot for Chane since the first book and was so happy to see a book for him and Wynn. Great book, I am impatiently waiting the next.

While I really like this series, this book ran a bit long with not a whole lot happening.

I have never given less than five star rating. However, this book was so slow. With the other books i was hooked at least 10 pages in. This book wasnt that interesting until last 80 pages. I normally read these books within two days tops. This one took me about two weeks. Still worth the read and story line. I liked the ending and loved the book once it became interestig enough to get me hooked. Hope the next is a little better excited to move on.
