Former law enforcement professional Lillie Leonardi has always lived with her feet planted in two separate worlds—the metaphysical and the physical. In the Shadow of a Badge, her previously self-published spiritual memoir, takes you on a dramatic journey of what happens when Leonardi’s two very distinct realities become dangerously intertwined.
During her work at the crash site of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, surrounding the fateful events of September 11th, Leonardi is forced to confront her connection to the divine—something she has struggled with since her youth. Her gripping personal account of the 12 days she spent acting as an FBI liaison between the law enforcement and social service agencies carries you into a world that combines the factual and logistical with the angelic and mystical.
After witnessing what she describes as a “field of angels” during her first minutes at the crash site, Leonardi must finally reconcile the opposing sides of her life. We walk with her through the diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, experience the guilt and fear that grip her, and witness the remarkable transformation of her soul as she discovers that forgiveness, of self and others, can be the best remedy.
As an inspiring example of what it really means to be called to service, Leonardi shows that it’s never too late to find your spiritual path and life’s purpose.

“In The Shadow Of A Badge” was a delight and very inspirational. I could hardly put the book down after beginning it. I would think it would be helpful to those who lost loved ones during 9/11 as well as those who believe in angels. I am so glad the grace of God directed me to this book. I could not put it down and cried most of the time. Lillie's story is incredible and it will bring you a source of strength. Now I will pass the book on to all of my friends and anyone in need of a boost. This true story is a very timely and comforting view of a tragic event that touched every American alive in 2001. I say timely because if this book would've come out shortly after the events of 9-11, or even five years later, the tragedy was still too fresh for me to have an interest in wanting to read a book that relived it, and I live safe in a Midwestern town practically untouched by those physical events. But I had the opportunity to visit Shanks Ville this past spring and when I heard there was a spiritual book written by someone who had been there in the aftermath; it was the perfect time for me to read it. Her vision of the angels is so believable and comforting that it touched my heart and brought peace to my soul. This story was beautifully written and for all Christians it effectively reiterates that God's hand is in ALL things, even earthly tragedies. Thank you, Lillie, for your bravery in sharing your very personal story and rest assured it will help a lot of people cope with this and other traumatic events (you have more than fulfilled Benjamin Franklin's advice of coming to the aid of one other human being in your lifetime!) May God bless you and your recovery. This memoir is one of a kind. Not only is it remarkable, it is something that makes you look at life, itself, is precious. She is, as I would say, one of "God's Blessings" to walk this Earth. It gives a different and inspiring perspective to the plight of flight 93. I would recommend this book highly for anybody visiting the memorial. Reading this book prior to visiting the Flight 93 Memorial provides for a whole different outlook and respect for this site. Well done, Lillie! I have two signs in my home that say "I Believe in Angels" and I do and I hope. Anything I can read to re-affirm this belief is wonderful and this book fits the bill. We can only all pray that the souls lost in 9/11 are all angels and that they care for those left behind. We can only pray that the souls we have lost on earth are all angels too. This book is a short read but you can tell the author writes with honesty and courage. God bless you for affirming my faith. In the Shadow of a Badge is a very honest and emotional story of person who worked closely with an aftermath of a big tragedy. Lillie is a cop whose heart is broken in pieces after what she sees on site. Yet she needs to move on and perform her duty as an officer. The inner struggle is going on throughout the whole book, the author is unable to find peace even years later. She is dealing with PTSD. The only straw that is holding her is a vision that she had - a field of angels. This vision helps her find courage, forgiveness, strength and at last a peace of mind she lost in September, 2001. This book is a reminder of those heroes, passengers of Flight 93 and what they did: "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." John 15:13. It is a reminder of a better place and that there is life after death. This book would help people who suffer from PTSD. And personally for me it was an encouragement to talk more to my children about God and angels and pray with them. And hopefully they will remember all we talk about now and it may help them go through some difficult moments in life just like Lillie's relationship and conversations with her Dad helped her.
Lilli Leonardi's true story touched my heart, mind and spirit! Her role in the immediate response to our country's greatest tragedy on September 11, 2011 as an FBI agent was truly courageous and selfless. Leonardi's personal and professional struggle with PTSD and grief in the years to come is an inspiration to so many of us who have witnessed and lived through tragedy. "In the Shadow of the Badge," reminds us that caring for ourself while caring for others is not only possible, but essential for true and lasting healing. I'm looking forward to reading Leonardi's next offering "The White Light of Grace", in February 2016. Rosemary Hanrahan MD MPH, Author and Life Coach
