Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Collins
This book teaches kids some basics in detection of eleven "woodland animals." Tracking includes identification of paw prints, of signs such as tooth and claw marks on trees, and of places where the animals live, eat, or sleep. Most of the animals are nocturnal, many live in underground tunnels, but some live openly in towns and cities as well as woods. Many other important facts about these animals, such as their built-in defenses (playing possum, the skunk's spray, and the weasel's change of color to match seasons) are included. The large, realistic, colored illustrations are excellent, and the layout of the pages is very attractive. One would wish, however, that the clever paw print design on the edges of the pages would match up with the paw print illustrations for each animal. Also, there is an inherent difficulty in finding examples of forest animals common to Americans, Canadians, and residents of the U.K. alike. East Coast Americans, for instance, rarely see the red squirrel and the magpie. Moreover, if a child is really expected to track these animals, how-to instructions and caveats are needed. An appendix of references for more in-depth study would help. An index and glossary are provided. Part of the "Animal Trackers" series.
