This is the first account of slavery I've read that didn't sugar coat it. Jacobs details the hatred & opression of blacks by their white masters & mistresses. People who were so horrendously mistreated & hatefully abused & neglected physically, emotionally & mentally. Jacobs does a wonderful job recounting her days in slavery. She depicts a will to survive that is totally foreign to us. She gives us a glimpse into the thoughts & feelings of someone who's thoughts & feelings were never considered. An amazing book to say the very least!

The book is written in first person telling..i enjoyed reading the true story of the slave girl. Her own words convey so much more clarity than fiction. For the history lover, this is it!
