This is part one of a five-part story.

“Something is wrong with this town…”

On the surface, Haven Park seemed to be the perfect picture of Americana. Nestled in the heart of Wyoming, its 517 residents were close knit, hard working and God fearing people. The city had never known major scandal, and the last violent crime committed was over ten years ago. Normal, right and honorable were upheld and all seemed to be quite harmonious…until the night of July 4, 1966, when the walls came closing in and the secrets could not be kept any longer.

It started with a murder. Carol Mathison, a lifelong resident and the only daughter of retired police chief Stanley Rogers, was found strangled in the park on the morning of July 5, leaving the community stunned. By all accounts, Carol was vibrant, well liked, outgoing and cheerful – making her murder all the more senseless. However, as the days drug by, more and more began to be revealed about Carol’s darker side…and the many, many people who might have wanted her dead.

The killer is closer than they know…

About the Author

Bex Aaron is too old to be concerned with convention. Thus, she's going to give you some random facts about herself, and about her books, in the hopes that it will make you smile...even if just for a moment. Bex Aaron's legal name is Rebecca, and you may also call her that if you wish. Just never call her Becky. She loathes Becky. She lives in Texas, and works as a legal secretary. It's a pretty swell job. She's pretty happy. She is divorced, and she's pretty happy about that too. She loves the color purple, both the actual color and the novel and movie of the same name. She would like to buy the world a Coke. She originally wrote the Independence Day series when she was 14 years old, back in 1997. Over time, she thought of ways she could improve on the original effort and the current incarnation made its debut as webfiction on July 4, 2009. She took a year to write the first two books and three years to write the third. A lot of people got angry with her about this, and she does apologize. Independence Day is a story about a small town, full of hard working, god fearing people...and one of them happens to be a murderer. It's expected to run a series of five books, and book four, Dirty Little Secret, is coming May 1, 2015. If you like the story, you're invited to join us on Facebook at That's pretty much it.

Why read 300 + pages when the first 10 pages of book 2 tells the story and is less confusing? Enjoyed it until I saw that it was just the start of a story, might go back and finsh it when the ending is publish. But I will most likelyforget to.....

This book was just "okay". The author did a good job of creating and shaping the characters, but I had a hard time following the story line. The ending? There isn't one; it simply says "To be continued". I had no idea who the murderer was while I was reading the story and was looking forward to finally winding up the book and getting it figured out. Since there is no ending, that didn't happen.

Bex Aaron really knows how to keep your interest in a story. I read quite a lot and quite a wide variety of books, it's been a while since a book series has captivated me in a way the Independence Day Series has, (actually, since the Odd Thomas series). After Book One I immediately started Book Two and now am anxiously waiting Book Three. Smashwords states the book will be out in 1-2 weeks. Yeah!!!!! Bex Aaron you are going to be up there with all my favorite authors. Good Luck to you on all your future writing.

Enjoyed this very much - kept thinking, as I was getting towards the end, "How is this all going to get wrapped up?" (Totally forgot that it was part of a series.!) Hope the last 3 are coming out soon! Don't keep me hanging Bex!!

Independence Day sucked me in like a daytime soap opera and held me captive as I voyeuristically observed the unraveling lives of some small-town residents. My pulse raced faster and faster as I headed into the final stretch. Suddenly I was there, turning to the last page then froze as it innocently shouted, .to be continued.. Aw, come on! I guess I'll have to get the next book in the saga (Tangled Webs) to find out who done it. Wonderful, gutsy read.

Great story

The story line was good, if a little long, but the ending left a lot to be desired. If you're going to make a book part of a series at least something should be resolved in each book. This one just abruptly stopped.

Highly Recommend! I found this to be a very good read with lots of twists and turns. Loved the characters and am still trying to figure out who the killer is. There are 5 books in this series and I read this and Book#2. I cant wait for Book 3 to be published so I can get started on it right away. Very good read and I will finish the series. I just hope the author as all the series ready to publish before I forget some of what I have read, lol.

Wonderful Suspense, Masterfully written by an author who knows how to spin a tale of intrigue like a spider spinning a web. She will trap you into her story of a quiet, close-knit community, until Carol Mathison, a lifelong resident and the only daughter of retired police chief Stanley Rogers, is found strangled in the park on the morning of July 5, leaving the community stunned. However, as the story unfolds, secrets revealed about Carol's dark side. Many people may have wanted her dead...
