An eye-opener to what goes on in the world of those hooked to euphoria... what takes them high, what brings them crashing down... A very descriptive " in their own words" narrative of their emotions, their lives, their dreams, their failures...Makes you sit back and think...

Insanity Beyond Understanding is an interesting study of addiction and treatment seen through the eyes of an experienced therapist. Each chapter gives specific insight into the struggles of both the addict and therapist. In groups and sessions the addict reveals himself, as does the therapist. At times, the difficulties for both seem insurmountable, at others the solutions are the most obvious and simplistic. Each chapter beckons you to keep reading. This text would benefit the addict who continues to suffer from their disease and all those who are interested in gaining understanding of the insanity of addiction, which at times seems---- Beyond Understanding.

Patil, he is an author and therapist that I would most enjoy hearing in a lecture.I fully enjoy the knowledge he shares in this book with readers, as a therapist with a passion for working with D & A patients. I understand clearly what needs to be said to patients who suffer through this addiction. I enjoyed reading the titles of each new character chapter, with anticipation of what the outcome would be for that character. I also found this book to be a good tool for me to follow through with; such tools as the life lessons told to the patients, and how "Chris" confronts patients-calmly with their own dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors. Also, I find this book to be reader friendly, as if, in a novel format that you can relax over the stories. I'm already anticipating more literature from Patil. I will tell my friends and associates "Insanity Beyond Understanding", is a must read, but of course they should purchase their own. Patil, he has out-done himself, and he should be teaching at universities for the new and upcoming therapists. "Great." Renee E. Wansley, MSW Psychiatric/Clinical Therapist

Working in the drug and alcohol/ mental health field for over 8 years, I found this book to be true to the fact. I have experience some of the same situations that Mr. Patel wrote on these pages. It is big, bold and irresistible and I couldn't pull myself away from this book! I already started reading Insanity- Beyond understanding for the second time!

"Insanity beyond understanding", is a gripping and honest study of how addiction can affect the person, society and the world. Mr. Patel`s experience in the field has given him the insight to address one of the scourges of modern civilization and all of it`s by products such as crime, homelessness, and disease. This book creates an awareness of the utterly destructive nature of the disease of addiction. This is a must read for anyone in the field of mental health or a twelve step program.

I would recommend this book to anyone whether dealing with addiction or not. This non-fictional work deputizes a true-to-life description of individuals who are caught into never ending cycle of addiction. After reading this compeling work, without exageration I can tell you that you are sure to stop complaining about the life you don't have and appreciate the one you do. The writer easily conveys the struggles of addicted individuals and also difficulties of Therapist trying to help these individuals overcome their addiction. Reading is easy, entertaining, humorous and insightful. Once you pick up this book you don't want to put it down until you have finished it. The best thing is that the stories are short and inter-connected. You want to know more and more about characters. The book holds your interest.

I am a 50 yr old sober alcoholic and just finished reading "Insanity beyond understanding". At first I found it insulting that he percieved addicts as being self centered and people who only knew how to lie, always avoiding the truth. While reading the book it reminded me of how my own time went from a good life to many monthes of contemplating suicide due to my addiction. I found every case very interesting and his simple solutions are those I overlooked in my everyday life. Thank you for a wonderful book. Are you writing anymore? Ps. You look young in your picture to have been in this field for so many years. M.E.O. yardley, Pa.

The insight and understanding you gain on both sides of addiction is amazing. You learn how the therapist feels and also gain insight into the addict. The stories are interesting, sad and thought provoking. Once you pick this book up, you can't put it down and the humanity of the book is something you just can't get out of your head.

BEYOND INSANITY-BAJEE'S BOOK. Insanity - Beyond Understanding is a must read. I am licensed clinical social worker and a certified Co-occuring therapist which have been in the field of addiction and mental health issues for over 30 years. Beyond Understanding is easy enjoyable reading but comprehensive in depth. It demonstrates real life issues of the co-occuring client. (Drug & Alcohol and Mental Health) The reader will ascertain consequences of the actions of each client to be profound and/or provocative. It is ironic that Beyond Understanding shares many of the same properties with Provocative Therapy. The writer with the same degree, MSW; same city, Philadelphia and a similar milieu. The writer easily conveys the struggles of the mental health and D & A client. Reading is awakening, enlighten, humorous and entertaining. You will be assured to have gained more insight regarding this disease and appreciate those who work with the mentally ill and those who fight the battle to stop the spread of addiction. J. Watts; LCSW, BCD, CCDPD, ICCDPD.

This work represents a true-to-life depiction of individual(s) bound by the demands of substance abuse. The story is told in a very raw fashion which is sure to elicit an array of emotions from the reader. Mr. Patil's accounts of the various situations those who are addicted to drugs find themselves in, are definitely eye-openers. (NOTE) One of the best times to read this book, are those moments when you feel life has let you down; those moments when you feel lost, overwhelmed, and without purpose. After reading the experiences of the individuals in this book, I can guarantee you are sure to stop complaining about the life you don't have and appreciate the one you do!

This book is very easy to read and with some grammar mistakes it gets the point across. It tells the truth and what needs to be done when dealing with addicts of this kind. Being a newcomer in this field it was very beneficial for me. It helped me understand ways to deal with different types of clients.

This book, recommended by a family member, was a compelling look into the everyday life of an addictions counselor. The chapters, each a story within itself, are easy to read and are all interesting and heartbreaking. For anyone wanting for a greater understanding of substance abuse, this book is a good starting point!

The author has done an excellent job to give the reader a rare glimpse of the minds of drug and alcohol abuse victims. A great reading for people dealing with abuse victims and therapists. The real-life situations described in the book make it more interesting and educational.

This compelling book brings home to the reader, the complexities of dealing with the "addicted mindset". In a sometimes humorous way Mr Patil shows us the frustrations of dealing with people who have adapted to a life of denial and self hate. I would recommend this book to anyone dealing with addictions or learning treatment strategies. I would like to have it used in college psychology classes due to it's raw and real character portrayals.

This book graphically depicts the daily struggles and triumphs that occur in drug and alcohol rehabs...and describes the often ambiguous attitudes of the clients towards becoming clean and sober. I commend Mr. Patil for the accuracy of his work..this is a "must read" for anyone who truly wants to understand the complexities of treating largely marginalized clients for substance abuse.

As interesting and often fun are the characters in this book, there is instruction and a moral also. That a lot of the more difficult characters were the ones to ultimaely get sober, shows that you never can tell who will porfit and who will not. The somewhat homespun (In an Indian sort of way) style makes for interesting and enjoyable reading. A great book for anyone dealing with addiction and with life for that matter. Jamed F McGovern Jr

By reading all this collection of stories one could imagine what goes in those minds who are in state of depression. World I would have never imagined without reading this book. Author has done a great job by bringing these cases in front in a very natural way and humorous way. A complex topic handled very neatly and gently at the same time.

IN, Insanity Beyond Understanding, the Author/Therapist gives an inside view from a treatment facility, a case by case account of individuals affected by substance use and abuse that leads to an addiction. The reader not only gets the detail story of each case, but also a glimpse of the counseling style used to help the client. As you read you get an account of the therapist instincts, thoughts in sizing up the situation, and therapeutic insights to listen and address their issues. It not only gives view to the world of substance abuse addiction, relapse and the revolving door of treatment, but the magnitude of the destructive impact it has on the addicts lives, their families and our society. You can sense the greater impact on society by the financial cost to the addict not working, unable to maintain employment or no desire to do so, children being born and not being cared for by their parents, crime and the health cost of not taking care of themselves. For the person who has no experience with an addicted person or knowledge of the behavior this book is a must read. And for those who have some knowledge, personal experience and work in the field must join the author from his prelude statement, "If we are ever going to stop this circle, then we, as a society, must take responsibility. We must fund education, job training, and family support systems for everyone, and we need to do so quickly, before we lose another generation to the tragedy of addiction". Belinda Hayes, MBA
