The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor to "promote Naval and Military Art Science and Literature." It commenced published its Journal in 1871. The present Director of USI is Lieutenant General PK Singh, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), former GOC-in-C South Western Command. Besides publishing reports of USI research scholars as books/monographs, USI also undertakes publishing of occasional papers pertaining to security matters by its members.
