Similar in concept to "Gale State Rankings Reporter" ["RBB" O 1 94], this new work contains 3,000 tables ranking cities or Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) on a wide variety of factors. Most tables list the top 50, 25, or 10 cities in rank order, though a few rank more than 280. Sources are given for all tables so that readers can find additional cities, if desired. In most cases, sources are census publications, but data were also taken from other government publications, trade-association publications, and newspapers and magazines. Most figures are from the late 1980s or 1990s. Browsing through this book one can find the city with the highest average percentage of sunny weather (Phoenix), where the most Hmong live (Merced, California), the city with highest rate of active TB (Atlanta), the city where the highest percentage of workers commute by motorcycle (Bryan-College Station, Texas), where the largest number of persons gave Finnish as their first ancestry (Duluth, Minnesota), the city with the most households with incomes of $150,000 or more (Naples, Florida), where consumers spend the most on tobacco products (Chicago), the place with the most establishments making synthetic rubber (Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas), and the city with the largest percentage of felony arrests resulting in a trial (Portland) There are indexes by city and by subject. Users will need to know the cities that make up a MSA to use the city index effectively. For example, the Appleton-Oshkosh-Neenah, Wisconsin, MSA is listed only under Appleton; there are no cross-references from the other two cities. All tables are also listed in the lengthy table of contents. Market researchers, city planners, government officials, college students and professors, and others will find this compilation of data useful. Academic and large public libraries should consider purchase.
