I read the first book of the series, Into the East: The Razing and could NOT wait to get my hands on the next one!!! SO super excited to have gotten it when it came out and I read it as quickly as I did the first book. Sometimes, when an author puts out a series, you worry that the next book in the series won't be as wonderful as the one before it and thus, ruining your excitement for the series. I can assure that this is, without a doubt, NOT the case with The Returning!!! It continues to carry you on an amazing journey with Aaranon, Zeul, Amana, Dihana, and the bad guy we LOVE to hate, Ravizu. Along the way you're going to be introduced to some new characters and, just as the author managed to do in The Razing so well, you'll be pulled into their lives. You'll feel like you know them, that you're worried about them, about their choices, their heartache, their triumphs, and their failures. You'll even laugh and cry with them. This is a difficult talent to possess as a writer and J.A. Davis has it in spades. It's hard to capture, with mere words, what I want to try and convey about this amazing sequel but I'll do my best. You know how when you're hooked on a TV show, say The Big Bang Theory, and you watch from the very first episode up to and including the current one, excited for each new episode that airs? That's how I felt about wanting to get my hands on The Returning. As to the characters, let's go back to the TV analogy. In the TV shows you love, all the characters change, evolve, deepen over time don't they? That's how it is in book 2 of the Into The East series. In The Razing, Aaranon is idealistic, trusting, and earnestly doing what he believes to be right. In The Returning, he's gone down the rabbit hole and realizes that things are definitely NOT at all what they seem. However, for all the changes that he goes through, Aaranon still has a heart for good. He still has a noble heart in spite of the fact that his world is tossed upside down and he's just trying to hang on. The characters we all fell in love with in The Razing are still here, but they've grown. They've deepened and become aware of what's TRULY going on around them. In the first book of the series, the characters live in the protected world of the nobles, as is their birthright. In learning to look below the surface and beyond the glitter and fantasy of that environment, they see what's happening beneath it all and it changes them. They change in a way that humbles the heart and has you turning every page, faster and faster, wanting to see how far it goes. The characters were amazing in The Razing. In the Returning? They are SUPERB!!! As he did in The Razing, The Returning leaves you with so many questions and waiting, desperately, for the third book of series to answer those questions. J.A. Davis does a wonderful job of writing a tale of intrigue, deception, love, laughter, action, and truth seeking. I'm hoping to read a lot more from this author. Get the Into the East series!!! You will NOT be sorry!!!!
