Overview

Choosing for her debut album a program of violin show pieces, transcriptions, and encores, Canadian-born Shannon Lee quickly proves she has the skill and dexterity to make her way around the violin. Her technique is put to the test with the very first track -- Wieniawski's "Scherzo-Tarantelle" -- one of the composer's most demanding short pieces. Most of the other works on the program are of a similar ilk, favoring the flashy and dazzling; there are a few lyrical numbers, such as Debussy's "Beau soir" and Carl Engel's "Sea-Shell." The program, however, does allow many opportunities to hear what Lee is capable of musically. Given her early orchestral performances of works like the concertos of Barber and Prokofiev, you would think she has more to offer than just flash. As for her technical prowess, it's not as precise as one might expect, especially given that it's put on nearly constant display on this album. There are occasional problems with intonation and her sound quality quickly becomes grating and shrill. The most regrettable part is that Lee is probably a much more well-rounded musician than this album gives her credit for. Judgment should be reserved on this new artist until she's been given the opportunity to perform a more favorable program.
