About the Author

Patrice L. Spath, MA, RHIT, is a health information management professional with broad experience in healthcare quality and safety improvement. She is president of Brown-Spath & Associates, a healthcare publishing and training company in Forest Grove, Oregon, and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Health Services Administration of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she teaches online graduate-level courses in patient safety. She also teaches quality management and patient safety in the undergraduate and graduate health administration programs at Pacific University in Oregon, and she is a guest lecturer on patient safety in the healthcare simulation master’s program at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. Over the past 35 years, she has presented more than 400 educational programs and authored numerous books and journal articles on healthcare quality management and patient safety topics.

Description: This introduction to healthcare quality management provides the basic tools used to measure and evaluate performance. The first edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The author's purpose is to cover the basics and foundational principles of quality management in healthcare for those without clinical healthcare experience. This foundation will give students the ability to adapt to all quality models within a healthcare setting. The goal is a worthy one, and the book provides the need-to-know information in one place for readers involved with quality initiatives who may not be clinicians.
Audience: It is written for readers with little or no clinical experience, and it works well for this audience, taking them through the healthcare quality management process from beginning (concepts and language) to end (the how-to of improving performance and "maintaining the gain"). The author has extensive experience teaching healthcare quality and holds numerous awards for her work in healthcare quality.
Features: The best attribute of this book is its comprehensive nature. It assumes readers have little to no clinical experience and provides the knowledge base in healthcare quality management upon which they can build. The book goes on to provide an excellent process improvement framework with the most commonly used tools and methods in the industry. The book has a good focus on patient safety and building reliability into organizational performance.
Assessment: This is a valuable book for anybody involved in improving healthcare quality management. It goes beyond just meeting the needs of those without clinical experience to provide a solid knowledge base to all healthcare professionals. The vocabulary, quality improvement methods and tools, and case studies are valuable and encompass commonly used quality management techniques. The second edition updates methodology in the field.
