Inverting the Pyramid is a thoughtful, thorough study of football tactics by someone who clearly loves the Beautiful Game. As a football/soccer coach and a fan of historical discussions in general I found Inverting the Pyramid enjoyable and fascinating. The depth of information J. Wilson packs into his book is impressive and represents a great deal of research and a keen grasp on the game of soccer. Wilson moves through the tactical developments in soccer and the key players, coaches and promoters who brought the game to its current status with clarity and a comfortable style. Overall, the author strikes a good balance between historical context and discussing tactical advancement. Although, this is a book on the development of tactical formations, Wilson puts enough historical vignette in his pages to leave the reader with an understanding of who left a legacy on the formation of football tactics. Wilson presents his information in the hope that the game in England might improve. The discussion is equally valuable for coaches in America where a national or regional style is still developing. For a developing coach looking for a catalyst to spark growth in their own tactical understanding this is a good book to wonder through. It is also a good way to understand some of the reasons why the game of football developed the way it did worldwide. Inverting the Pyramid is probably not for the casual reader who is not a soccer fan or, who is not interested in the history of the world's most popular sport. However, it is a must read if you are a serious fan of football or, if you are a person trying to understand why modern tactics on the pitch are what they are. Wilson's book is essential for any serious soccer library.

Comprehensive history told through the evolution of the tactics of this beautiful game. Begins with the all out attacking style of the early English through the modern sophisticated hybrid positions used throughout the globe. It will expand your appreciation for the game and proves that football (soccer) is only contested by baseball for the title of "chess on grass". Jj
