Friendly creatures feel ignored as children focus on their screens in this debut picture book.

An unnamed narrator describes the curious beings called the Invisibles who stay hidden so "they are free to explore…borrow stuff, and make a mess!" Although they are mostly imperceptible to adults, the Invisibles enjoy playing with kids. But these days, many children ignore them, opting to spend time in front of their screens, often indulging in games. The Invisibles are saddened by this situation and, as a result, play tricks on kids, such as hiding a singular sock or stealing a puzzle piece in hopes of being acknowledged. While conceding that screens can be useful, the narrator tells children to "look around, and find something else to do…adventures await." In Eleanor Chun's heartfelt tale, the positive message is clear. The images by debut illustrator Eugene Chun, the author's husband, are cartoonlike and fun, mirroring what is explored in the text. The Invisibles are deftly depicted as furry, colorful little creatures with smiling faces, and the humans are of various races and ethnicities. But while it offers helpful advice, the tale is a bit verbose, featuring some repetitive sentiments and an Invisibles backstory that could have been tighter. Additionally, it's unclear if the Invisibles are symbolic of children's imaginations or are the stars of a fantasy, since they "mess up your Wi-Fi or drain the battery from your device."

An engaging but uneven tale about limiting screen time.
