Overview

Is a Session Man: Studio Work 1955-57

Bo Diddley brought churning African and Caribbean rhythms into the DNA of rock & roll, and his edgy, offbeat stage style, coupled with his fuzzed-out, driving guitar rhythms, make him a too-often unsung godfather to everything that followed in his wake, from rock to rap. He was also a wonderfully eccentric songwriter, a versatile session musician, a pretty good talent scout, and an experienced producer in the recording studio, all of which made him a valuable commodity for Chess Records in the late 1950s. This interesting set collects tracks Bo either wrote, produced or played on for Chess between 1955 and 1957, and it shows a revealing mix of gritty Chicago blues, ragged street corner doo wop, and deep south country twang on eccentric sides like "Hey Little School Girl," "Roller Coaster," and the odd "Wyatt Earp," among others. Some of these cuts are crude acetate transfers, so the sound here isn't always ideal, making this a set mostly for collectors and archivists, but it's still a fun listen. Oh, and check out the Marquees -- a pre-fame Marvin Gaye is one of the vocalists.
