Isabel's Independence by Blushing Books, Mariella Starr

Trapped by duty and older brothers undermining her for too many years, Isabel Piper yearns to leave drudgery behind and become a modern woman, befitting of 1893. She wants freedom, and independence. With more determination than actual familiarity of how to do it, she heads off to start a new life in a western railroad town of Overton, Colorado. Unprepared by her eastern upbringing, she finds western men crude, and bossy. Determined that she will not be discouraged or tolerate interference of her plans, she forges ahead until she meets the one man that will not get out of her way.

After only one look at a pretty, green-eyed, redhead who flattened a man with an iron skillet, Deputy Hutch was captivated. He had a good idea what his perfect woman was supposed to be like, but the gal he'd decided on didn't seem to want to fit into his plans. She didn't particularly want anything to do with him. He'd have to find a way to bring her around, but that wasn't going to easy if he kept having to warm her backside trying to keep her out of mischief.

About the Author

Sometimes it’s hard to pick what I love most beyond my family; I write, paint, renovate and am a voracious reader. The joke in our house about vices--is that mine is books. My idea of the perfect house is the public library, just add a kitchen to make my husband happy, and I would be good with it. I live in Nevada with my husband, and two dogs that I adore, and lot of scorpions and lizards that still make me scream and act girly. I love to travel, and I get to travel to visit my grown children who have both chosen to live abroad, one in Ireland and one in England—what could be better.

I love writing; creating the characters and making them come alive. For a short time, while they are directing me through their stories, they are alive for me and I hope they are to my readers. My favorite genres for reading are history, romances, and mystery. Sometimes I think I spend as much time in research as I do in writing, but it is important to me that the time-periods be correct. It also makes me one heck of a good trivial pursuit player.

I’m a casual person, enjoying a laid back lifestyle where dressing up means putting on real shoes and not flip-flops, cowboy boots or running shoes. (The running shoes are not my idea of fun but my husband says if I’m spending all my time on a computer writing, I also have to move—10 miles a day!) Oh, what I put up with because I love that man. I also love receiving e-mail from my readers and can be contacted at

K. Tyler: This is an action packed historical romance novel. The story is of a strong willed heroine seeking to forge her own path. Isabel is given the opportunity when her aunt dies and leaves her wealth enough to have the independence she long for. With her strong will she often finds herself in trouble and soon meets her leading man a true alpha law enforcement Deputy Hutch. Their story is full length which allows you the ability to get to know and love both. This story has a excellent blend of adventure, danger, suspense and loving discipline infused with humor enough to keep you turning the pages and look in the end longing for more. This was a delightful surprise and a wonderful engaging read.

What a sweet surprise this a actual novel! The info blurb gives you the story details so I'm just going to mention what I liked. First I loved that Isabel was such a strong woman she is adventures and loving. Hutch is a wonerfuly written alpha male lead he really trys to listen and understand Isabel but also takes her to task when she plows a head without thinking of what could happe n . Ienjoyed the secondary characters also really would love to read more about Ben and Sarah. I have read other books by marissa starr and I likrd how much more detailed she was in this book about Isabel,Hutch,Sarah and Ben. I must say that there is a description of a rSarahs rapet. Well worth the money and will read again

I absolutely love it when the book I'm reading actually takes enough time to really tell a great story. This one does the job! And it does it extremely well!! Isabel's story is captivating from the very first page and Hutch is my perfect example of an alpha male!! The story engages you, and treats you to many memorable characters. Lots of well deserved spankings, too. The storyline keeps you interested throughout the entire book. I wish I could give it more stars! Well done! (Side note - I loved Great Aunt Winifred)

Isabel is a young and self-reliant woman - ready to take on the world. But in the late 1800's the world certainly isn't ready for her! Fiery, spirited, and unwilling to be held back, Isabel chooses to leave her home town and head west. She can no longer tolerate the ungrateful, entitled, and even dishonest behaviors exhibited by her eldest brother. When she arrives in Overton Colorado, Isabel is confronted with a town filled with men who are just as bossy, much more crude, and just as dishonest. Isabel meets the town's handsome deputy after putting an unruly and overexcited half-whit in his place. Has she taken on more than she can manage?  I would classify this book as a romance with a spanking twist. The spankings are not over the top - nor is one occurring on every page. While spanking is part of this book - it isn't the only focus. The author writes a well formulated and complete story. This erotic romance is book length and totally worth buying. The plot is well developed and thoughtful. I loved hating the story's villains - and waited for them to meet their comeuppance. I identified with this heroine and applauded her tenacity. And I couldn't help but cheer on for the hero when he takes our heroine in hand. My favorite part of the book was the romance that developed between the young doctor Ben and a lovely young woman who had been treated poorly by the town that should have been protecting her.  Please note that I was provided with an advanced free copy of this book for review purposes.

This was an excellent book! It was nice and long, so you can really get to know the characters. This is the first book I had read by this author, and now I will look for more by her. I would love to see a sequel about Sarah and Ben!

I enjoyed this story. It was a good length with plenty happening all the way through. Romance, action, danger and suspense. I liked that Isabel and Hutch were good people but not perfect. Hutch saw what he wanted and didn't give up until Isabel was his. He was old-fashioned and modern at the same time. Old-fashioned in wanting Isabel to obey him when he was trying to keep her safe. Modern when he made it clear to others her wealth and businesses were hers and her responsibility not his. He also listened to her needs about being a businesswoman rather than keeping house. I also liked that they could make each other smile and they were very loving. We got to know others in the town also, especially Sarah and Ben and their fledgling relationship. The developments of all the relationships seemed natural and real. By the time the story ends everything is resolved and Isabel has grown as a person and realises what's important to her and Hutch promises he wont let her become spoilt and privileged, using her wealth in town to get her own way. The ending is good.

This full length story had a lot of plot twists that all tie up nicely at the end. It is a fun romantic western with a strong-willed, talented, smart, rich, young heroine who forges her own way in the wild west. There are several characters that the readers grow to know and care about during the story. It is one I would enjoy seeing continued so I could follow the couples and this town on their next adventures. The story is very pleasant and clean, though there is some swearing and sexual content. The spanking scenes are few and far between and aren't related to the sexiness of the story much at all. They fit in with the story line and are only written in when there is a real cause and you see them coming and expect them. The build up of the whole story is very good throughout, I had trouble putting it down. I was very happy to see that it was very well written, and finished all the stories without leaving any dangling unanswered questions.

This was a terrific book, the key word book. Not a short story but a full lengthy novel. It had wonderful characters that you love and a great story line. Deputy Bill Hutch was a strong  alpha man who could be understanding but would spank Isabel when needed. Isabel was a strong, feisty woman that believed in women's rights and wasn't afraid to voice her opinion which got her into trouble. Her adopted little sister, Sarah and her beau Ben were also wonderful characters and I hope there is another story about them.  Awesome read.

I loved this book!  First of all, it is book length, not a novella.  Second, there is a strong female main character who knows her worth and a male character that is strong enough to not care that his woman has more money than he has.  Third, this is a book with a wonderful plot.  If I could give it 10 stars I would!   I stayed up all night because I couldn’t stop reading, I saw the sun rise! OK, on to the review.  This story is primarily about Isabel.  She has been working as an unpaid servant for her brothers when she finally gets fed up and asks her Aunt Winifred if she can move in with her.  Isabel has been visiting Winifred for years and sharing the stories that she has been putting on paper.  Unknown to Isabel, Winifred has been selling them to magazines and has put all proceeds in account for her. Winifred recommends that she move out west to live in a house that she has inherited from a distant cousin.  Isabel didn’t know that the cousin was very wealthy and owned most of the businesses in the town.  While she is there, she meets the sheriff, Deputy Bill Hutchison.  Deputy Hutch gets off to a bad start with Isabel by spanking her when she didn’t deserve it and then kissing her in front of the town gossip.  But, he apologizes (I know, when does that happen?) and asks to court her.  Isabel stands up to the misogynist men in the town and states what she is going to do and does it.  She rescues Sarah and helps her find herself.  Hutch defers to her in matters of her inheritance and her work.  But, in matters of her safety, Isabel defers to Hutch, or her bottom pays for it.   I really enjoyed this story.  I hope that Ms. Starr continues on with Hutch and Isabel’s story and also Sarah and Ben’s.  I would love to read about it!

All the characters in this story made it an enjoyable read.   What  a fun  and entertaining story!  I loved the spunky impulsive Isabel.  All the characters in this story made it an enjoyable read.  This book is also longer than most and is a western theme story. This story has substance, as well as, action, fitting for an 1893 western story. Isabel is tired of being under appreciated by her four brothers and with the help of her Aunt Winifred, moves from Pennsylvania to Overton, Colorado.  Her life and adventures begin, she arrives to live in a house bequeathed to her Aunt, and it turns out to be a large house.  She ends up marrying the Sheriff, William "Hutch" Hutchinson and being taken in hand for her antics.  The sex scenes are clean and the domestic discipline is not over the top.

This book is a little slow at times. It's not as good as her other books.

What a silly story. The main character only mentions in every other sentence that she is modern and independent. The female characters get beaten (spanked and whipped with a switch) for their own good. The females aren't "allowed" to swear. What kind of sect does the author belong to?
