When LA cop Katie McBride almost dies in a shooting, it shakes her tough exterior to the very core. She's busy drowning her sorrows in a bottle of bourbon when her childhood crush, Sheriff Cubby Hawker, ambles through the door. The sexy lawman is determined to force her to return to their hometown of Lake Howling, Oregon, where he's the sheriff and everyone still thinks of her as 'that sweet young Katie'. At first, she thinks going home might help her get over the trauma she's experienced, but she soon realizes that she's just as hopelessly in love with Cubby, and he still treats her like his kid sister. It's making her feel even worse, so she's about to pack her bags and return to LA when a dead body turns up, and the sheriff asks for her help to solve the case. Is this Katie's chance to prove she's more than meets the eye, or has her chance at love with the luscious lawman already passed her by?

About the Author
Wendy Vella is a lover of all things romantic, and with a voracious appetite for reading across all romance genre's, she eventually settled on the Regency era to begin her writing career. She penned her first novel at eighteen though she says it will never make an appearance further than the closet in which it currently resides.
After having her two children, she then joined Romance Writers of New Zealand and started honing her chosen craft by entering competitions with some success and attending conferences, until eventually, she was ready to publish her first novel.
With several of her Regency historical novels reaching bestseller status on Amazon, she has recently moved into contemporary romance. Her first series is set in Oregon in the fictional town of Lake Howling, and she has enjoyed the change of genre immensely, though is quick to add that she will still be writing historical, as the colorful and sometimes turbulent waters of Regency London are still her first love.
Wendy is a sucker for a happy ending, having secured her own. She has been married to her own dark, brooding hero for 30 years and shares her home with two wonderful children, two dogs and anyone else who happens to be visiting at the time. Born and raised in a rural area in the North Island of New Zealand, Wendy loves the beaches and lush green rolling hills of her homeland and is proud to call herself a very patriotic Kiwi!

Can't wait for the next book
Recently found this series and I am enjoying the stories immensely... Each of the books revolves around the members of a small mountain town in Oregon where everybody knows everybody and everybody knows everybody's business. Well thought out story lines, well developed characters and quick reads that have enough content to keep you turning pages... While the stories revolve around the small town people the characters take you to New York City, Texas, Denver and other locales so that things keep moving in interesting ways... Some funny, some dangerous and some sad... Think I am currently on Book 6 and will continue till the series ends.. Reads of about 200 Nook pages each and worth the time...
Awesome story by Wendy Vella! I'm loving this series! Katie McBride almost died in a shooting that took the lives of her partner and friends that served on the LA police department with her. She has been struggling physically and emotionally since the incident and now her life is in danger because she was the cop that shot one of the bad guys at the scene who later died and his family is retaliating. Sheriff Cubby Hawker is in town for some meetings and classes and happens to walk into the very bar that Katie has taken up residence since the shooting. He notices that she looks and smells awful and knows that she needs to come home to recover with those who love her surrounding her. Cubby is the last person Katie wants to see after he broke her heart when she left town six years ago, but her boss agrees with Cubby about getting her out of town and back on her feet physically and emotionally and then she could come back to work. Going back home brings back so many memories and it also makes Katie realize that being home with all of her family and friends is just what she needs to heal especially Cubby. I was given an ARC for an honest review. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
Have now read the first 3 books in this series. Each one a stand alone and very good. Also love the characters in each one. Cant wait foe Newman and Macys story. CB
