Murdley Gurdson is a spectacularly accident-prone boy. He falls into wastebaskets! He drops only the most valuable vases. Worse yet: “Whatever happened, it was usually his fault.” One day, as Murdley is taking a walk, a bird lays an egg above him and it splats on his head. How could that really be Murdley’s fault? Turns out, it sort of is. Munsinger’s hilarious illustrations help make this silly story about cause and effect as lighthearted as it is useful. This read-aloud favorite is now part of a fun hardcover series about life lessons.

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
Everyone has a bad day every so often, but the one Murdley Gurdson had was NOT his fault. How did that happen? Here is another comical story by the very popular author and illustrator pair who have often worked together. Readers can find text and pictures full of fun, charm and gentle humor. Children will discover how Murdley solves his problems. It involves a lot of his animal and bird friends. No one really wants to admit that it was the fault of just one creature so what can Murdley do? Could it be his fault after all? That does not make Murdley feel very good. The colored drawings of the animals add to the action of the story. What happens at the end is sure to please everyone and there is a surprise in the ending. Listen for giggles as your read this aloud, or share it with someone who can read some of it back to you. Lester's books are among the most beloved and requested by children everywhere. This one is part of the "Laugh-Along Lessons" series. It will be easy to hear young readers' reactions from the very first page. Have a good time looking at the pictures. It is not necessary to mention it specifically but the behavioral lesson underlined by Lester's story is one that is ripe for discussion. After all, what are good friends for? Reviewer: Enid Portnoy
