Overview

Marianne Faithfull, who gained her notoriety in the '60s as much for her relationships with famous musicians like Mick Jagger as she did for her own music, descended into a heavy drug habit in the '70s that sapped her underappreciated creative talent. This compilation documents a time when she was beginning to crawl out again -- the late '70s and early '80s -- and draws from three of her albums for Nems Records, Dreaming My Dreams, All I Wanna Do in Life, and The Way You Want Me to Be. The music here is not among her most polished, indeed it is the rawness of the songs that make them intriguing. No other female vocalist can make a guttural growl sound musical the way that Faithfull can and here it is showcased at its unadorned best. The title track aches with sadness, a cover of Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" shines, and "Dreamin' My Dreams" expresses an almost existential longing. Overall this is a fine collection that highlights the best from an undervalued era in Faithfull's musical career.
