This took me a few days longer to fully get into than its predecessor ''III'' (Frenetic Records), as the album overall has a much stronger focus on intricacy than the mock-ironic metalheadery they're known for. For those not familiar, the Fscking Champs (aka C4AM95) are basically indie-rock expatriates forcing that particular camp to abandon their prejudice against balls-out metal. Seriously intricate and remarkably melodic symphonies of perfect fifths, pinch harmonics, and chugging hand-muted rhythms, all interspersed with some experimental Mellotron and synth noises, fuzzy 80s synth-rock, and even a little Cheap Trick for good measure. It might be easy to dimiss these guys as simply being ironic for the sake of irony, but IMHO they've taken the best parts of mid-80s metal (a la Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc) and stripped it of its calculated posturing and narcissist hang-ups. Even though this record is incredibly impressive and stands up to multiple listens (multiple times a day), I'd still recommend ''III'' to those seeking a starting point. Once the hooks are in, you'll follow the logical course of action.
