John Stuart wasn't around when this country was founded, but he wrote what I consider to be the very finest example of the importance of personal liberty. The way Mill stresses the need for society to be tolerant of other people's beliefs and actions as long as they don't directly effect others. His realization that this is the only way society can truly grow. On Liberty is also grouped with The Subjection of Women which is also a classic text in the equal rights movement not only the womens movement.
