J. T. by Jane Wagner, Gordon Parks

To the guys on the block, J.T. is the kid who stole the radio out of the red convertible before they could get to it. His neighbor, Mrs. Morris, declares him a first-class nuisance. His mother is bewildered — "He's just gone bad, that's all.... Stealin' and lyin' and I don't know what all." But all the sensitivity, responsibility, and care of which ten-year-old J.T. Gamble is capable emerges when he finds an old, one-eyed, badly hurt alley cat. J.T. takes on a new dimension as he lavishes all the love he is unable to express to people around him on the battered cat he has found in the junk-filled empty lot.

I am 33 and currently had a rivoting life experience. I started reminiscing of books I had read in the past that moved me or changed my life. This book was one of three I could clearly recall. I am so relieved it is still in print so I can buy it for my daughter.

Years ago, I read this book and it impacted me greatly. I laughed, cried and always remembered the book. I always wanted to get it, but couldn't remember the name. Thanks to the web I have found it again. I have ordered it for my reading group and can't wait to share it. Even though it was written long ago, it is stil applicable today. Get it if you love animals or have ever had an animal you loved and lost.

I read this book when I was in elementary school, and finally found it again. I cried then, and I still cried when I read it this time. This book shows how perceptions can be false, and how love manifests itself in the most unusual ways.

I remember reading this book way back in 1977 when I was in elementary school. Jane Wagner's story and Gordon Parks' photos are still just as powerful to me now as they were back then. Today I share this story with my young nephew, and one day I hope to share it with my own children.

I read this book with my JHS students. It was interesting to watch them being so involved in the literature. They were moved by JT's perserverance as well as his family dynamic. I highly recommend this book for group reading. It was a rich experience.

J.T. has always been a favorite for my 5th grade students in the Bronx, N.Y. Teachers, if you don't have a class set, buy just one copy to read aloud to children in any grade.

This story had me on the verge of tears. J.T. shows much responsibility as he secretly takes care of the one-eyed cat. He builds a house for him in the junk yard and he is devastated when he gets hit by a car.
