Jack of All Trades by DH Smith

A dream job becomes a tale of money, love and murder for Jack, a builder, who gets a job repairing the summerhouse of a millionaire couple. The two months’ work will pay his debts, and give him space to sort out his personal demons. Except the couple are at war, both having affairs, their marriage beyond salvage. The husband fires Jack, but she takes him back on, complicated further when he falls for her secretary. And when there’s a murder, using his tools as the weapon, Jack is prime suspect.

About the Author

I write as DH Smith and Derek Smith. DH Smith is my pen name for the Jack of All Trades crime series featuring builder, Jack Bell. The first is Jack of All Trades. Jack lives in the Eastend of London, where I live, and makes a precarious living. On each job there’s at least one murder. Jack is variously a sleuth, a suspect and gets too close to being a victim. He’s always short of cash, a failed marriage behind him, and hopefully his alcoholic days. In each book there’s a romantic element as Jack is ever hopeful. He has a daughter, Mia who is ten years old in the first book. I have been writing for over 30 years, beginning with plays. I had them performed on radio, TV and theatre. After working in a community bookshop I began to write children's books as Derek Smith. Hard Cash, a young adult novel, was read on BBC radio, Frances Fairweather Demon Striker! was shortlisted for the Children's Book Award, both published by Faber. The Good Wolf won the David Thomas Prize. These days, I am concentrating on my Jack of All Trades crime series.

Reviewed by Danielle Urban for Readers' Favorite Jack of All Trades by DH Smith is an intriguing tale full of drama and excitement. This is the first novel that I have read by DH Smith. Readers will definitely find enough action to keep them glued to the pages. There are times when readers will think something is about to happen and then doesn't, due to another character popping into the scene. Then there's a romance that is dead and the sole cause of trouble. Next, there's one man doing his best with his failed marriage and staying away from one sin. Mystery, suspense, and murder can all be found in this brilliantly well-written novel. For fans of Clue and of Agatha Christie's novels, this is a must-read. DH Smith has masterfully woven many lives together in this stunning novel. Jack of All Trades fits perfectly with the overall story. A man who starts his own business is soon doing work that might be the end of him. Jack of All Trades...is exactly that. Jack finds himself doing major work for a couple. Stuff that is out of his comfort zone and yet he agrees. Money is definitely worth what they ask for until it goes too far. Exactly how far his employers will go and in what direction will be for readers to discover. Not only that but readers will see the inner workings of a nasty affair, a man being beaten almost to a pulp, and an innocent man being framed. Readers will feel like they are there experiencing the scenes first hand. DH Smith has masterfully created a way to lure readers. Readers will easily connect deeply with the characters. The conflicts are plentiful and the suspense hangs thickly in the air. Overall, I highly recommend Jack of All Trades to readers everywhere.

The title character, Jack, is a solid, hard working man who finds himself involved with several different ladies and a murder. The plot easily holds the readers interest, all the characters are unique and it is always difficult to tell which way Jack is leaning. When Jack becomes the central focus of a murder, I was happy that it was not easy to figure out whom was guilty and the motive the murderer had. If you like a murder mystery that keeps you guessing right up til the end, this one is for you. I look forward to the next book in the series.
