Paul Begg presents a superlative account of the facts of the murders attributed to "Jack the Ripper." While I find the theories of who actually committed the attrocities in Whitechapel fascinating, Begg gives you what is known placed in a total historical and sociological context. That is where the Ripper scholar should start. It also reminds the serious scholar that while one man committed the murders of five social castoffs, it is the society that millions created that is the cauldron from which the horror emerged.
