About the Author

Heather Gray is the author of the Ladies of Larkspur inspirational western romance series, including Mail Order Man, Just Dessert, and Redemption. Other titles include Ten Million Reasons, His Saving Grace, and Nowhere for Christmas - everything from Regency England to modern-day America. Aside from a long-standing love affair with coffee, Heather's greatest joys are her relationships with her Savior and her family. Years ago, Heather de-cided she'd rather laugh than yell. This theme is evident in her writing where, through the highs and lows of life, her characters find a way to love God, embrace each day, and laugh out loud right along with her.

Jackal***** book 2 Regency Refuge Series by Heather Gray December 1816...Rupert Burmingham had a quiet, orderly life as the managing steward for the Duke and Duchess of Castle Felton. But that was shattered with the arrival of unexpected guests....a young woman, Juliana Clairmont, her two spirited sisters, 16 year old Eleanor and 17 year old Endora and their very, very old nursemaid/chaperone, cane-wielding Mrs. Burnham. After tragedy strikes, Juliana and her sisters flee their home, seeking refuge and finding themselves at the mercy of a complete stranger—Rupert. Even though Rupert, the new Earl of Mendax, is their guardian, Juliana finds it difficult to trust him—yet she is drawn to him. There is more to the tragedies Juliana and her sisters have experienced than any of them realize. Danger lurks around every corner, for Hunter will stop at nothing until Jackal is killed. Intrigue, mystery, murder, lies and greed make it hard to know who to trust and who the enemy—or enemies—really are. Family, building trust, bravery, courage, love and strong faith bind unlikely characters in unforeseen ways. I loved Rupert and Juliana's characters, both have a strong faith, moral character, honorable and would give all they have—even their lives—for those they love. I tried to figure out who Hunter was, but it wasn't revealed until towards the end with the surprising identity. This is one of those stories that kept me guessing, on the edge of my seat at tense moments, laughing and crying at others and had me reading far into the night. ~I won an e-book copy of this book from ACFA VA chat party, this is my honest review~

I had not read any of this author's work previously and had not read the first book in the series. I am happy to add another author into my reading rotation! This book was fantastic!

A year or two ago, I came across the first book in the Regency Refuge Series by Heather Grey, called His Saving Grace. It contains one of my all-time favorite romantic scenes, which, unfortunately, I cannot reveal because of its importance in the story. Needless to say, however, I was thrilled to discover that the series now has a second and third book. (There was only one book when I discovered the series and I have not been keeping track of the author). This second and slightly longer book is called Jackal. In Jackal, Juliana is desperate. Because of her uncle’s death, she and her much-younger sisters are thrown out of their home and forced to find their new guardian, a man by the name of Rupert. Juliana is hunted by dangerous men while Rupert is hunted by a man even more dangerous, The Hunter. Will they learn to trust one another before their enemies catch them? Jackal is the kind of book I like—a bit of romance mixed with danger and set in a time and place far from here and now. The novel moved quickly and intrigued me the entire time. If it was not the developing romance between Rupert and Juliana, it was the revelation of the next part of the mystery. I enjoyed the sweet romance. The way Juliana and Rupert learned to love each other as they spent time together doing the things of daily life was beautiful. I also loved watching Rupert and Juliana learn to trust one another. I would not have been easy considering the weight of the responsibilities and dangers that trust would reveal. The Hunter was a mystery to me. I could not guess who he was. However, that might have been because The Hunter’s identity was a man who had only been mentioned once or twice. I wish the author had done a better job of giving the readers a way to guess. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this sweet romance.

It is wonderful to read a Christian romance that is not predictable.

First I have to admit, I've been slightly in love with Rupert ever since book one of the Regency Refuge series "His Saving Grace." I couldn't wait to see if book 2 would star Rupert! Imagine my joy! He is a man who will keep you safe, always put you first even if it means the loss of his life, and perhaps has a tendency to scowl. Juliana, her sisters & their chaperone weave their way into his heart at a time when he isn't expecting anything but years of restless boredom. Juliana is fiercely loyal to her sisters and their chaperone. She wants nothing more than to keep them safe and take them away from whatever haunts their past. Both Rupert and Juliana are keeping dark secrets from each other. The mystery and intrigue that follows takes you on a wild ride with an ending you will not anticipate. This book stands alone from book one of this series, but if you have read "His Saving Grace" you will be delighted to find the return of the Duke and Duchess. Heather Gray has become one of my favorite authors. The ones that I put on the list to keep track of when a new book is being published. I love all of her characters. I love that she can successfully write in so many different genres from Western 1880's Idaho to Regency to Contemporary. She writes cleanly, with a clear story line and well developed characters and she keeps you engaged from start to finish. Jackal is yet another success for Ms. Gray.

Mystery, suspense, intrigue, murder and mayhem! This story keeps you turning the pages wanting to know more about who The Hunter really is, and why he is so determined to kill The Jackal. Until it is revealed in the story, I still was uncertain who The Hunter would be.  I love the characters in this story, Rupert and his morals, his faithful service to the Crown, and faith in God, no matter what it has cost him in his life. His friendship with the Duke and Duchess and his service to them. Then enters unannounced into his life, not one but four feisty women, Juliana, self sacrificing for the two half-sisters she loves, Eleanor and Eudora,  and their chaperone, Mrs. Burnham and her wicked cane!  This story takes us on a journey of pain due to untimely deaths of family members, to redemption for the wrongs in life and love found between two special people.  This is a beautifully written tale that covers so many emotions and is clean story that shows a man whose faith in God, no matter what life has thrown at him, does not waiver and God's grace and goodness. Love can be found in two unlikely people, when circumstances bring them together.
