Jackie Collins Presents: Lethal Seduction

Jackie Collins Presents: Lethal Seduction

If this unique soundtrack -- the accompaniment to romance novelist Jackie Collins's latest steamy tome -- were to carry a subtitle, it would have to be "Tell It, Sistah!" The 13 songs on Jackie Collins Presents: Lethal Seduction were handpicked by the pulp literary diva herself and relate the ABC's of love from a lady's perspective. Several tracks qualify as "greatest hits" -- Dionne Warwick's rendering of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Walk on By," Dusty Springfield's schmaltzy "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," Tina Turner's "Let's Stay Together" -- but Collins shows some surprising curatorial savvy, picking a few unexpected cuts such as Carla Thomas's soulful "B-A-B-Y" and a sad but jazzy song by English dance-pop duo Everything But the Girl called "Rollercoaster." The only clunker here is All Saints' utterly unfunky version of "Lady Marmalade," which pales by comparison to the soulful flare exhibited by Turner, Thomas, and Aretha Franklin, who offers "Something He Can Feel." Most appropriate to the album is Eartha Kitt's "Where Is My Man," where, over a flimsy disco beat, the quirky chanteuse croaks lines such as, "Where is my man?/He can't be far/Look for an ascot/a big cigar." The song is cheesy as all get-out, but its trashiness and femme fatale candor are also irresistible. Just like Collins's books.
