Jake Gyllenhaal by Gail Snyder

Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal was born to be a movie star. His mother and father, a Hollywood screenwriter and producer, talked about movies around the dinner table and casually entertained celebrities like Paul Newman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Barbara Hershey, and Dustin Hoffman. Jake and his actor sister, Maggie, spent their childhood putting on plays, entertaining at family dinners, and appearing in some of their parents' movies.

Jake's breakthrough role came in the 1999 film October Sky, for which he received rave reviews. Since then he has appeared in the cult classic Donnie Darko (2001), the summer blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow (2004), and the thriller Zodiac (2007), among other films, and received an Oscar nomination for his role in the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain. As a result of his many successes, Jake is widely considered one of the most influential young actors in Hollywood.
