The book is humorous & suspenseful. It's like the couch hopping game. You can't touch the floor or you die. It's very imaginative. It serves as a breath of fresh air in the "Humanity is doomed" genre. While I know it's an apocolypse style story, I wish some non-main characters would get more character devlopment before getting axed off (or jammed in this case). Many of them show up for a page or two before dying. There a lot of deaths, however, that are satisfing! Usually, it's some sort of a leader figure. The whole concept of leadership is brought up as being either a tyranical outlet or a difficult, thankless responsibility. In many, cases being a follower is a better option. The main character is loveable & remains the most human of the group. Being oblivious makes him a great narrator because he can be perfectly straight foward about things with the reader. He feels like an average dude you would know. I constantly worried or cheered for this kid. Yahtzee's commentary about society and social interaction has a weird, modern "Lord of the Flies" feel to it. It's definatly a dark cloud with a silver lining to it. It's a satisfying adventure overall. If you're not into semi-dark humor, this probably isn't for you. Also, Austalokitty. <3

Being a fan of both Zero Punctuation and the Chzo Mythos games, I wasn't sure what to expect from this. I am pleased to say that whatever my expectations, Jam surpassed them. I'm loathe to say anything that will give away the story; suffice it to say, it's quite funny. I'd definitely recommend this to fans of British (or in this case, Australian) comedy, and to anyone who likes comedy in general for that matter. I'd love to see this on film, as it is very 'Shaun of the Dead'-esque.

‘Jam’ is a fun filled look at the apocalypse. The story follows a group of survivors as they make their way through the destroyed city of Brisbane, getting in and out of trouble and trying to save themselves and others along the way. The characters are interesting, and the plot is full of laughs. The writing is lacking a bit in the way of descriptions and drawing a vivid mental picture, but what it lacks there it more than makes up for in wit and originality. A must read for those who love Monty Python.

I enjoyed the original characters and overall premise. The story itself was very reactionary and riddled with happenstance. Most frustrating was coming to easy conclusions that the characters seemed oblivious to. Odd decisions by characters also frustrates. There are though, moments of Yahtzee's brilliance.

Funny, tense, and clever. Jam makes for a fantasticly unique disaster set up which gives rise to a great many suspenseful challenges and some very clever solutions to those challenges; challenges I have not seen in other media. Jam makes for a very unique premise and goes about utilizing it in every inventive way possible. The heroes were that key level of stupid where you wanted them to succeed in the end but couldn't wait for their next bumbling mistake all the same. Combine them with two factions of mentally unstable survivors and the absurdity of the premise in the first place, and you end up with some pretty great situational comedy. About the only thing which bogged down my experience was an overwhelming sense of unfairness, which I entirely attribute to personal preference and you should evaluate as you see fit. It is a disaster story after all, comedy or no, and it is quite clear that the author has a cynical view of humanity.

Though I didn't like this book as much as Mogworld, I would recommend it to other interested in a bit of humor. It gets 4 stars for the chuckles it engendered, but misses the fifth for a bit of a let down ending. And even though you have to always suspend disbelief in books like this, there was just something that always seemed like "no-one would ever act like this." I do have to admit to really enjoying the corporate take on survival!
