About the Author

I was born in Brooklyn, New York, in the winter of 1947. I was the oldest of seven children. Both of my parents worked long and hard hours, sometimes holding two jobs at a time. By the early 1950s, they opened a grocery store. I guess you can tell who the babysitter was.

I got married at age 21 and had three children: Valerie in 1969, James in 1975, and Sarah in 1981. Because I had helped raise my siblings, I found it easy to raise my own children while working and attending college to become a registered nurse. The girls were all easy, but James was just a little harder.

Looking back on my journey, I am proud of my three children. Valerie has been a banker for 26 years, Sarah is a veteran with a bachelor's degree in human services and is currently working, and James has been with the USGS for almost 27 years.
