Children's Literature
Any young adventure seeker will enjoy investigating this book. One in the "In the Footsteps of Explorers" series, this thin volume contains a world of information. Beginning with the expeditions prior to James Cook's journeys, the author sets the mood of adventure. An overview of Cook's three Pacific voyages follows. Full color illustrations enhance the short text paragraphs. Maps with three-color arrows direct readers to Cook's various paths. A time line travels throughout the book in the side margins, listing major discoveries and events of the period. Important terms—navigation, New World, eclipse—are shown in bold print. A glossary follows at the end of the book. The captain's relationships, positive and negative, with natives are examined, as they are the foundation of future multicultural connections for trade and societal development. Interactions with the Maori, Tahitians, and eventually the deadly Kaua'i are briefly summarized. Details of Cook's influence in the Pacific conclude the short biography. Intrigued readers will want to learn more about James Cook and other pioneering explorers. This series of explorers' biographies is an absolute necessity for a social studies classroom or school library. Cross-curricular connections can easily be made with science, math, and literature, building on the basic details provided by the author. 2006, Crabtree Publishing, and Ages 7 to 15.

This was perfect for my third grader's "famous person research project". Actually this would be great for older kids too. The pictures are great. The information is simple and well organized, and really served our purposes well.
