Chapter One
Hi! My name is James Little Elk, and I am a Native American. I want to tell you all about my family. I want to show how my family lives, what we eat, and what we wear.
Long ago, when my great-grandfather was a little boy, he lived in a tepee with his family by the Elk River.
My family lives in a house near the Elk River not far away from where my great-grandfather lived as a little boy. I love to watch TV and play video games.
Great-grandfather taught me about our clan name. We are called the Otter People, because like the otter, we are good at fishing.
Today, we are still called the Otter People, but we fish differently.
I live with my father, my mother, and my little sister, Melodie.
Like me, Melodie has a traditional name as well; she is called Morning Dove.
My real name is James, but my traditional name is Little Elk; at school they call me Jimmy, but I like Little Elk the best.
The clothes Grandmother made when she was young were made from the skins of the animals her dad hunted.
