About the Author

Once upon a time, in a land not very far away, a young girl was born to a bookworm father and a fantasy-loving mother. The little girl grew up to collect books, read anything she could lay her hands on, and tell stories to anyone willing to listen. It's not a surprise to anyone who knows the family that she also grew up to write her stories down.

Honor Raconteur has moved all over the country in her life but at the moment she calls Tennessee home. She loves chocolate, strawberries, music, art, and reading books while soaking in a bubble bath to avoid being interrupted.

As the first segment of the Advent Mage Cycle by Honor Raconteur, Jaunten is a highly entertaining read. Though it is included in the young adult genre, it’s a book that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. It’s an excellent introduction to the series and to the story of Garth.

Jaunten (Advent Mage Cycle #1) by Honor Raconteur Jaunten (Advent Mage Cycle #1) by Honor Raconteur is about a young boy named Garth who is an untrained Mage that wants to be trained so that he can control his magic. On his way to the school, he runs into a dying man that had an urgent message for the King. The dying man's name was Elis and he was Jaunten. His people had a "blood memory". All their knowledge was transferred through their blood usually at birth. Elis knew he would be dead soon, so he decided to make Garth a Jaunten by cutting Garth's hand and placing it in his hand that was covered in blood so their blood could mix together. Garth makes it to the castle with the message for the king. After speaking with the King, he is sent to speak with the magical council. After speaking to the council, he finds out that he is an Earth mage. The council places him in school and assigns Professor Doss as his mentor. Professor Doss has his aide Chatta help Garth get his robes and books. Garth becomes friends with Chatta. Garth goes to school and starts to learn to control his magic but somehow is always in some kind of trouble. Jaunten is a wonderful fantasy written for the young adult but can be read by all. The concept of the Jaunten is a fascinating idea. The ability to pass down a person's knowledge through blood transfer is a unique concept and the author has written a marvelous story around that idea. The characters are well rounded and thought out. The friendships Garth makes help him grow throughout the story. Garth and Chatta become close and develop a very strong friendship. It's nice to watch their relationship grow. Maybe in the next book it will grow into something more. I think the characters that I loved the most were Night and Didi. The things that they did had me cracking up. In addition, the author is able to surreptitiously show characters who display morals and values. An example is when Garth stops to help Elis. Even after death, he can't just leave him lying there out in the open, he ends up burying him. (He also worries that he did not bury him the most honorable way) It is nice to observe the growth Garth has over the length of the book. I also find it comical that he always seems to find trouble even when he's not looking for it. From the beginning of the book, the author is able to capture the reader's attention and take them on a wonderful, magical journey that is incredibly entertaining. There are some grammatical errors throughout the book but it did not detract from my reading the book. Jaunten is a book you shouldn't miss reading. It is also a book that definitely should be made into a movie. I think it would be an enchanting and mesmerizing film. 4.5 Stars *I won this book through Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
