Jazz Dialogues, Vol. 3: Out of Nowhere

James Williams decided to celebrate his fiftieth birthday by making a series of duo recordings with some of his longtime associates and fellow veterans, producing a four-volume anthology that also proved to be his final releases prior to his unexpected death in 2004. This third volume, like the others, is full of memorable performances, including the superb take of "I Mean You" featuring Ron Carter, a dreamy "Dolphin Dance" with vibraphonist Steve Nelson, and the lyrical duet of "Little B's Poem" with tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce (who is erroneously listed playing soprano sax). The vocal tracks are also strong, featuring Freddy Cole, Etta Jones, Roger Holland, and newcomer Kim Nalley, the latter shining in a sensual interpretation of "Teach Me Tonight." Each of the four volumes stands in its own right as a rewarding cap to James Williams' career, which was unfortunately cut short by his untimely death from liver cancer less than a year after the CD series was issued.
