Jazz for a Lazy Day [32 Jazz/Jazz Heritage Society]

This is supposedly the end of the road for 32 Jazz's wildly successful series of mood records. With titles like JAZZ FOR WHEN YOU'RE ALONE, JAZZ FOR THE OPEN ROAD, JAZZ FOR A RAINY AFTERNOON, and JAZZ FOR THE QUIET TIMES, you might expect the worst in lukewarm jazz-pop, but what you get instead is solid, mainstream jazz from the likes of Woody Shaw, Phil Woods, David "Fathead" Newman, Larry Coryell, Red Garland, and a slew of other genuine jazz heavyweights. JAZZ FOR A LAZY DAY is right in line with the earlier releases when it comes to authentic jazz. There's strong, straight-ahead tracks from Ralph Moore ("Monk's Dream"), Houston Person ("Daydream"), Sonny Stitt ("Walkin'), and Ricky Ford ("Chelsea Bridge") and such solid players as Donald Byrd, Russell Gunn, and Wallace Roney. What all this has to do with a lazy day is anyone's guess, but you can ponder that question while marveling at Hank Jones's work on "Blue Monk" or Houston Person and Ron Carter's inspired interplay on "Blue Seven." In other words, don't sweat the mood, just dig the groove.
