Jazz on a Saturday Afternoon, Vol. 1

In 1970, the Atlanta Jazz Society imported cornetist Wild Bill Davison for one of their monthly concerts; all of the music has been released on two CDs. Davison was not familiar with any of the musicians, except for possibly Ernie Carson (who here sticks to piano except when switching to his usual cornet on a spirited "Royal Garden Blues"), but it is obvious that he was pleasantly surprised by their playing. In fact, by the third song on this nine-selection CD, Wild Bill sounds somewhat jubilant. Trombonist Wray Thomas and clarinetist Herman Foretich were playing above their heads, and the music (highlighted by "Avalon," "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," "You Took Advantage of Me" and the two-cornet "Royal Garden Blues") is quite exciting. The second volume is even better, and both are recommended to Dixieland collectors.
