Jazz Trumpet, Vol. 1: Classic Jazz to Swing
This is an excellent chronicle of the classic jazz trumpeters from throughout the music's history. One of three discs, the first part here spotlights such bedrock innovators as Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, and Bunny Berigan. Taking the late-swing and bebop period, disc two offers up a fine mix of both obscurities and highlights by Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Clifford Brown. Finally, the last disc tops things off with a nicely gauged selection of modern cuts by the cool-toned Art Farmer, a fleet-swinging Donald Byrd, and free jazz's trumpet muse, Don Cherry. There's a lot of music to listen to here, but fans of the brassy end of swing and bop should have no problem making their way through the stellar work of the aforementioned soloists as well as the likes of Cootie Williams, Fats Navarro, and Freddie Hubbard.
