Saying this novel is about sex addiction is like saying CATCHER IN THE RYE is about being a teenager. Yes, the hero’s addictions give a shape to the story, but this is a character study first and foremost and the character of Jerkoff is a memorable one. For one thing, he DOES have a name but he doesn’t feel like he deserves it. A screw up in every way (and SCREW is the operative verb), he reaches rock bottom one chilly Christmas Eve in Los Angeles. Faced with two terrible choices, Jerkoff pulls off a Kobayashi Maru maneuver and comes up with a third option. It’s not an easier option, but it is the one that offers him a path to redemption and he grabs it like a drowning man grabs a life preserver. Which makes it sound like this is one of those sincere memoirs (read: boring) about someone turning their lives around after turning it over to a higher power. This book is heartfelt. But along with the sincere gratitude the writer and his fictional alter-ego feel, there’s so much more. This book is by turns hilarious and horrifying but it is always, always honest. As Jerkoff wanders through the sexual temptations L.A. and San Francisco offer—like some latter-day Candide—his episodic adventures take us along for the journey. It’s a wild ride but the ticket is worth it.
