I bought Jesus Burned and thoroughly enjoyed it. With a true story as its formative background, the novel introduces a memorable cast of characters and events that include homosexuals, homophobes, racists, alcoholics, a paraplegic, an arsonist, religious hypocrisy, police brutality, political corruption, public indifference, and the morally ambiguous betrayal of close friends. I particularly enjoyed Defilippi’s skill with “street dialogue,” his colorful descriptions, his similes, metaphors and flashes of unexpected humor. It’s a good read.
