What if Jesus were to tell you in first person about His time on earth?
"You are about to read an account of the life and ministry of Jesus that combines all four gospels into a single narrative and allows Jesus himself to tell us the story," writes veteran Bible translator Robert H. Mounce at the beginning of Jesus, In His Own Words. "Although the style is contemporary, the desire is to clarify the meaning of the original text rather than to impressthe reader with clever phrases."
To that end, Mounce's more conversational interpretation of the Gospelsallows the reader to "be there" during" Christ's birth and boyhood, at his baptism by John the Baptist, on the hillside when he spoke about the kingdom, amidst the miracle workings, and so on. His approach makes the words fresh to longtime believers and inviting to those seeking Scripture for the first time. Complementing the prosaic text, a full index of people, places, verse units, basic themes, and paragraph headings is also included.

JESUS IN HIS OWN WORDS is a fresh new approach to the Gospels. Robert Mounce uses a clever twist to the Gospel stories where Jesus Himself is the narrator and tells the history about Him and His disciples, His travels, miracles, and all the people He taught during His ministry. It made these stories of Jesus, who lived here on earth so long ago and far away, so real, as if I were the only one He was speaking to. Mounce uses today's vernacular to make you feel you are sitting at Jesus' feet, listening to Him tell you His story. It is very easy reading and historically accurate.
In March of 2009, I traveled through Israel and Jordan, walking in the footsteps of Jesus. It was a wonderful experience, one that really brought to life the Bible stories I had grown up hearing and reading. For the first time in my mind, Jesus was more than God's son. He was more than our Savior. He was real. He was tangible. He was human. He was a man who walked and talked, who loved, who rejoiced and who cried. To walk the roads He walked. To visit the towns He visited. To see, hear, smell, and taste what He did when He lived, was a faith-changing adventure I wish every Christian could experience. If a trip to Israel and Jordan is not in your immediate future, Robert Mounce's book Jesus In His Own Words [B&H Books; Original edition (September 1, 2010)], may help to accomplish the same task. Jesus in His Own Words combines the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) into a first-person account of the life and ministry of Jesus. It is Jesus telling His story. Mr. Mounce writes in a straight-forward, non-assuming manner enabling the reader to explore and experience the life of Jesus without the intimidation and confusion that sometimes comes when reading even a modern translation of the Bible. While Jesus in His Own Words is in no way meant to replace the Bible, in my experience it will help the reader to better understand what she is reading as she reads through the gospels in the Bible. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I relived some of my travels from the Spring of 2009, while gaining knowledge of Jesus, His teachings, and His life. If I am ever blessed with the opportunity to travel in Jesus' footsteps again, this book will be in my pocket. Until that time, however, I will continue to read, to enjoy, and to learn.
