Jews Harp

"The twang's the thang" when it comes to this recording of solo and accompanied Jew's harp. Originally named "Jaws Harp," this collection of Finnish and Norwegian folk tunes brought to unique life on these singular but also basic and globally common instruments is impressive and unforgettable. These traditional melodies sound as rudiments of many European folk traditions. Originally a fiddle piece, "Gammal Brollopspolka (The Old Wedding Polska)" sounds like a new voicing of the English folk dance "Lord of the Dance." A variety of harps in different keys (C, D, G, and A) and bass harp are presented singly (solo and lead) in groupings and sometimes backed by fiddle (traditional in Finnish arrangements) or viola, guitar, flutes (period and natural scale), Indonesian bamboo Jew's harp, jouhikko (bowed harp), and even banjo. Flute and fiddle melodies translated to the Jew's harp make up about a third of this album. Originally airy and bright, these pieces take on new life with vibrant, mid-range reverberations of the Jew's harp touched by the faint respiration of the intimately connected player.
