This fictional work presents a unique point of view regarding loss and grief. The protagonist, Sofia, learns to understand the speech of animals. From them, she learns to reshape her attitudes and beliefs towards death. The story is sometimes harsh and unrelenting in its approach to the central theme. At other times, especially with Sofia's dog, it is touching and funny. Vivid descriptions and imagery with an appreciation for nature and using the natural world to find solace. I've never read anything quite like JHATOR.
