Gr 3-5 In this slight story, John Midas of The Chocolate Touch (Morrow, 1979) and his family visit Australia. Bored by tourist sights and his mother's everlasting recital of guide book facts (which will bore readers as much as it does John), he wanders off into a forbidden cave and emerges in the Dreamtimethe prehistoric beginnings of Australian life as told in the Australian mythology. There he discovers fire, invents the boomerang, and becomes a hero to the aborigines. Eventually, missing his family, he finds his way back through the cave to the present day, emerging in time to be scolded and be part of a family picture. While children who have been dragged around tourist sights will relate to John's boredom, his story is not likely to capture their interest. Only for the most avid fans of The Chocolate Touch.
