Overview

The Hanna family of Downpatrick, County Down is of ancient origin. At least three generations of Hanna's settled in or near the area since 1731. Downpatrick is one of the oldest Irish towns and was noted in antiquity maps dating back to the Roman Empire. The center of Downpatrick was located at the intersections of Saul, English and Irish Streets and was the commercial center of the town.

Here resided John Patrick Hanna who was an auctioneer. The Hanna family lived on Scotch Street for a number of years in Downpatrick. It is thought that John Hanna disapproved of his daughter, Mary's marriage to Daniel Tracy who was a local laborer. Hanna continued working as an auctioneer even after his daughter left Ireland bound for America. This then is the narrative of the life and times of John Patrick Hanna, the auctioneer of Downpatrick.
