John Steinbeck: America's Author based on 0 ratings. 1 reviews.
Disappointed by this book. The life of Steinbeck could be of interest for children emerging into the young adult genre of books. Not sure if children knowing about Steinbeck would help children understand the past but it can open student's world to a new writer and books. The book did include many photographs of Steinbeck that do bring out some interest. My problem with the book is the author simply discussed Steinbeck's writings. I wanted more about the the life of Steinbeck, not a review of his work. The author failed to mention why Steinbeck was always traveling to Europe and Mexico, why he was drawn to farm workers, why he needed peace and quiet to work, why his marriages failed... There was hardly any information on his personal life and his family life as a child, as a teenager, and as a father. The writing in this book is easy to follow and read but boring. I would not recommend this book to a student because after reading this book most would not want to know more about Steinbeck's life. The author failed to mention any of his weaknesses (I'm sure he had some) and only focused on his literary work. I do believe the author oversimplified Steinbeck's life thus giving us a weak story.Ages 9 - 11.
