This is a big book with a great variety of stories - from mysteries, to sense-of-wonder SF, to social commentary. Each one is introduced by the author with appropriate anecdotes that help place the story in context over the last 30 years of his career. I can't say I liked all of the stories, but there are some that I loved. The shining examples for me were 'In the Halls of the Martian Kings' about astonishing life discovered on Mars; 'Press Enter' describing paranoia about computer networks circa 1986; and 'The Bellman' a previously unpublished short with recurring character Anna-Louise Bach, Lunar detective. This book is worth reading even if you've read most of the stories before. For those that have never read a Varley story, expect well-imagined and expertly-crafted science fiction.
