Joone by Emily Kate Moon

Joone likes the color orange, ice-cream sandwiches, and playing outside. She lives in a yurt with her grandfather and her pet turtle, Dr. Chin, who rides around on her hat. Grandpa teaches Joone something new every day. Sometimes Joone teaches him something new, too, like how to make a daisy chain. Together they enjoy life’s small joys—sunsets, tree houses, and most of all, each other.

Emily Kate Moon’s debut picture book is a charming tribute to the outdoors and a tender portrait of a grandfather and granddaughter’s loving relationship. Fans of Ladybug Girl, Freckleface Strawberry, and even Dora the Explorer will fall in love with this independent, free-spirited little girl.

My boys love this book and can't get enough of it! For me, Joone inspires me to keep the child in myself alive and to further influence my boys to be independent, free-spirited and fun-loving. Who wouldn't enjoy being more like Joone, enjoying and celebrating life as she does with what she has around her. The illustrations are delightfully simple, yet with intricate detail and remarkable use of color. I can't wait to see what adventures Joone has in store for the future.

This is an elegant children's book.  It is filled with beautiful artwork and powerful prose.  It's didactic without bludgeoning the reader over the head with its themes.  I loved it at first read.  It has since been my go-to gift for parents, and I've heard nothing but fantastic reviews back.  Thanks to the author!  It's just a great read.

Joone is great for boys, girls and grown-ups. Joone is a favorite in our family due to her joie de vivre and sweet grandfather. Joone is one of those books to read again and again. With each reading we notice new, fun details.

Joone is wonderful! What a beautiful book with a marvelous main character. Joone is self-assured and independent, but still sweet and childlike. What a great role model for children and adults alike! The whole theme is one of happiness and love. And Grandpa and Dr. Chin are wonderful contributors to Joone's happy world. My two boys love it and I will be giving many away as gifts. I expect Joone will become a classic. I'm looking forward to a whole series!

Joone is the free-spirited, honest, playful, loving, whimsical, and curious kid who will remind adult readers of all they once were and all they imagine themselves still-to-be in an ideal existence. Oh, right--this is a book for kids! It certainly is, and it will delight and inspire a gazillion requests to read and re-read again and again, and you won't mind doing so, not a bit. Joone had me and my kids at "hello". She's sure to capture your heart, as she has the many kids (and their grown-ups) to whom I've gifted this book. It's a treasure. Eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Yes, series! (Please?!!)
