About the Author

Born in Colorado, I also lived in the mountains of Wyo. and S. Dak., but married a cowboy who loves the desert. What is left of the Chaffin homeplace farm/ranch is west of Grand Junction CO. In the early years we had an eight-party telephone line, no television, and farmed such remote places that we packed in our water, cooked on a campfire, and slept on the tentless ground. My four children labored in the fields with me.
I also taught music and art lessons, and conducted such works as Handel’s Messiah. In 1987 I illustrated my first book, Elmer Bair’s Story.
After my children were grown I returned to college and received my Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado Christian University in 2001, and my Master of Science degree from Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies (Chicago) in 2013. Maureen can be contacted at: .

One of the most controversial figures in American history, Joseph Smith, started what is now (arguably) one of the fastest growing religions in the world. Regardless of what you think of him, he is difficult to ignore. The results of the work he did before he was killed stands on its own, and can't be easily dismissed. I am only partially through this book, and as of this point there are two main facets that have my attention The first is the narrative that puts Joseph on a very human level. Maureen Chaffin makes him a very real and tangible person. You will feel the happiness of the amazing and good things that he experienced, and feel the sting and the hurt of the injustices he endured. And you will be amazed how he endured them. This narrative of his life has helped me better understand the patterns of the events that are shaping my life. I suspect it will help others do the same. For example, you won't soon forget her narrative on Joseph's experience in Liberty Jail, and you will look at the difficulties you may be experiencing in a genuinely new light. The second facet that has me really interested are the references Maureen includes in the text. I have never read something more well connected to surprising reference material that most scholars don't know exist. She spent several years at a Jewish college and discovered very old texts that speak about a man coming in a future time that very much resembles Joseph Smith, Jr. in a myriad of ways. This reference material is hard to ignore. Be careful with this book, you might walk away from beveling he just might be the real deal. You will at least find him to be one of the most genuine persons you have met and realize that much of the criticism directed towards him may just be unfounded.

I have collected several books about this topic over the last 30 years. I am a student of the Bible and gained a love for the stories of the old testament from my father who himself memorized and retold the stories to us as children on long family trips from Utah to Kansas. Because I am a long-time collector of such things, the subject matter alone was enough for me to order the book. I was overwhelmed by the size of the book when it arrived, But undeterred I dove into it’s pages which presented a natural narrative that cleared away my initial apprehensions. The thoughtful research and beautiful illustrations quickly drew me into the author's message…it is a message that is told with the energy of a child’s anticipation of Christmas morning and the care of a mother who nourishes and grooms her child for the first day of school. I scarcely could put down the book…and it is not doubt a long read. But laced throughout the presentation of the story is a treasure that is found when the book is complete.
